In the rural regions of Turkey, a man's wife hasn't done her duty by him until she bears him a son. It doesn't matter if she is loved by him, or has worked hard on his behalf, or even if the two love each other. It doesn't even matter if she has worn herself out giving birth to daughters. As the years go by and no son is born, the pressure mounts for the husband to divorce his old wife and marry someone who will give him a son. In this story, this is exactly what is going on. Omer and Hanim have five daughters, and she is pregnant with another child. When that child turns out to be a girl, Omer feels he has no other choice than to try and find another wife, even though he loves Hanim and he cannot afford the dowry for another wife. By various measures, Omer accomplishes his goal, but his victories are in every case tinged with irony.
