HOLLYWOOD, July 14, 2000 -- The Beatles’ "In My Life" is the greatest pop song ever written, according to a poll of musicians and songwriters by Britain’s Mojo magazine, but the real shocker might be the surprise inclusion of a current teen queen: Britney Spears. "In My Life" by the Fab Four topped the Top 100 songs list, while Spears’ "…Baby One More Time" checked in at the other end at No. 97. Oh baby baby, indeed. The majority of the Top 100 songs date from more than 20 years ago. The Top Five: 1) The Beatles, "In My Life"; 2) The Rolling Stones, "Satisfaction"; 3) Judy Garland, "Over the Rainbow"; 4) The Beatles, "Here, There and Everywhere"; and 5) Smoky Robinson and the Miracles, "Tracks of My Tears." The only artists from the 1990s to make the Top 100 were Oasis with "Live Forever" and Nirvana with "Smells Like Teen Spirit." The full list will be p
"Three Kings," David O. Russell's Gulf War actioner, was named Best Picture by the Boston Film Critics Association today. The film, which also won Russell a Best Director award, follows American soldiers who find a map in the desert leading to an arsenal of stolen gold bullion. As they hunt for the treasure, the trio encounter atrocities of war and face moral dilemmas. Starring George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and Ice Cube, "Three Kings" grossed about $58 million at the box office and was earlier named one of the National Board of Review's top 10 of the year. It's the second year in a row Clooney has starred in the association's top picture; the 1998 Best Picture was Steven Soderbergh's "Out of Sight," co-starring Jennifer Lopez. Hilary Swank picked up her third critics' award of 1999, named Best Actress for "Boys Don't Cry." She plays Brandon Teena, a Nebraska woma
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Dec. 28, 1999 -- What do the Golden Globes know anyway? Last week, voters nominated John Williams' underwhelming "Angela's Ashes" at the expense of his more stirring work for "Star Wars: Episode One - The Phantom Menace." And what of Marc Shaiman's brilliant satire of the musical theater, in the form of "South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut"? Snubbed. Well, we're here to set things right.Which soundtracks broke new ground, broke our hearts and broke down barriers with crossover potential? Read on for our list of the Top 20 soundtracks of 1999:20. "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me," "More Music from Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me," "Pokémon: The First Movie" – No, we weren't very impressed with the contents of these best-selling albums, just the marketing savvy behind them. 19. SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 9, 2000 -- Most end-of-the-year "best of" lists from critics deplore the current state of movies before telling you about the few nuggets that came out that were actually (according to them) worth your time. The year 1999 was different. The critics didn't complain, and rightfully so. The last of the 1900s marked a groundbreaking revolution in cinema. Films like "Three Kings," "American Beauty," "The Sixth Sense" and "The Blair Witch Project" expanded the boundaries of what traditional generic films could become. True oddballs like "Being John Malkovich" were made and even turned a profit. Sequels like "Toy Story 2" didn't suck. Overall, going to the movies was about as dreadful as living through Y2K. Instead of suffering through a bunch of bummers, audiences were treated to a diverse, colorful celebration of life as we live it, and where it's he
MTV viewers have voted British DJ Fatboy Slim's "Praise You" as the all-time best music video. Madonna, Michael Jackson, Eminem, Queen, Beastie Boys, Carson Daly, Spike Jonze.
SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 5, 2000 -- Despite all the hype, Madonna came in second best at the weekend box office.Studio tracking studies predicting a first-place opening for Paramount's "The Next Best Thing," the romantic comedy/drama teaming the Material Girl with Rupert Everett, were wrong. Instead, top honors went for the third consecutive weekend to Warner Bros.' "The Whole Nine Yards."Bruce Willis "Yards," the R-rated hit comedy from Warners, Morgan Creek and Franchise Pictures, held strongly in its third weekend with an estimated $7.31 million (-24%) at 2,793 theaters (-117 theaters, $2,617 per theater). Its total is approximately $38.5 million.Directed by Jonathan Lynn, "Yards" stars Bruce Willis and Matthew Perry."Unbelievable," Warner Bros. distribution executive Jeff Goldstein said Sunday morning, delighted with how well "Yards" was ho
"Hannibal" proves that some things are better the second time around. The long-awaited sequel to 1991's "The Silence of the Lambs" grossed $35.5 million this weekend and continued its box office reign for a second week. As the first movie of 2001 to reach the $100 million mark, the thriller earned over $110 million after only 11 days and has already grossed $140 million worldwide. Action movies usually make a strong showing when it comes to sequels. "Mission: Impossible 2" took in $215 million compared to the original's $181 million. "Die Hard 2" brought in $115 million while the original grossed $81 million. Many comedies become popular enough to practically guarantee a successful sequel. The first "Austin Powers" movie earned $54 million overall while the sequel, "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me," eventually took in $206 million and even out-grossed the or
Ang Lee was named by Time magazine as best American director in the periodical's first installment of its "best of" lists. Time wanted to fashion "the definitive list of people who stand for the best in America today," the magazine told reporters. Other entertainers who were feted by Time include Sean Penn for best actor, Julia Roberts for best actress and The Roots as best rappers. Time lauded Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Ice Storm, Sense and Sensibility) saying, "This soft-spoken gent is proving again what's always been true: that American cinema is nourished by the artistry of foreigners."

Vivendi Universal has agreed to buy music portal MP3.com for $372 million in cash and stock, Variety reports. This comes a few scant months after Universal Music Group, wholly owned by parent Vivendi Universal, successfully sued MP3.com in federal court for copyright infringement. This continues a series of Internet acquisitions by Vivendi Universal, which last month bought Emusic.com for $23 million and bought the other 50 percent of GetMusic in March. In April, Universal also announced that its coupling with Sony Music, tentatively named Duet, would be distributed and marketed by Yahoo! Details about how the service will work and how much it will cost have not been announced. According to The Associated Press, MP3.com shareholders will receive $5 for each share they own or receive stock in Vivendi worth $5, or a combination of both, Vivendi said. The company hopes that its acquisition of MP3.com will let it reach more than 40 million more registered users on the Internet.

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 19, 2000 -- Fifty-two-million "Survivor" viewers can't be wrong. Apparently, that's what the people at TV Guide also think. The magazine named the CBS reality-TV series the No. 1 primetime show for the year. NBC's acclaimed presidential series "The West Wing," which swept the Emmys this year, came in at No. 2. Other winners include HBO's "The Sopranos" (No. 4), NBC's drama staple "ER" (No. 8) and the Peacock Network's comedy "Will & Grace" (No. 10). The Peacock Network's "Ed" (No. 6) is the only new debut this season that made the list. Here's TV Guide's list of the Top 10 shows of the year. 1. "Survivor" (CBS) 2. "The West Wing" (NBC) 3. "Once and Again" (ABC) 4. "The Sopranos" (HBO) 5. "Malcolm in the Middle" (FOX) 6. "Ed" (NBC) 7. "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (WB) 8. "ER" (NBC) 9. "Everybody Loves Raymond" (CBS) 10
HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 18, 2000 -- Strapping Irish stud Colin Farrell was named the year's best actor for his work in "Tigerland" by the Boston Society of Film Critics on Saturday. And if that alone does not cause a bit of head scratching, take a look at the heavyweights whom the young upstart has beaten out for the nod: Tom Hanks in "Cast Away," Javier Bardem in "Before Night Falls" and Mark Ruffalo in "You Can Count on Me." Perhaps just as surprising is actress Ellen Burstyn snagging a best actress win for "Requiem for a Dream." Before this award, some thought of Burstyn as more of a supporting actress contender. Burstyn beat out Julia Roberts ("Erin Brockovich") and Laura Linney ("You Can Count on Me"). The Boston critics handed the best picture award to "Almost Famous," as well as the best director mention to the film's helmer Cameron Crowe, who also shared the best scree
HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 7, 2000 -- Let the awards season begin! The National Board of Review of Motion Pictures, one of the Industry's high-profile Oscar indicators, has announced its top film picks this year, with the Marquis de Sade tale "Quills" nabbing the best film nod and helmer Steven Soderbergh earning the title of best director for films "Erin Brockovich" and the upcoming "Traffic" with newlyweds Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The best actress nod went to "Brockovich" star Julia Roberts, and "Before Night Falls'" Javier Bardem, who played exile Cuban writer Reinaldo Arenas, picked up the best actor award. As to the supporting role categories, Joaquin Phoenix was named best supporting male for his work in "The Yards," "Gladiator" and "Quills," and Lupe Ontiveros scored the best supporting female nod for the indie film "Chuck and Buck." Ang Lee's
HOLLYWOOD, June 4, 2000 -- Here on Planet MTV, Keanu Reeves isn't just any pretty-boy actor. He's the best actor. All righty, then. Reeves was named best actor, his 1999 sci-fi hit, "The Matrix," best film at the ninth annual MTV Movie Awards, held Saturday at the Sony Pictures backlot in Culver City, Calif. "The Matrix" was the night's big winner, taking home a field-best three awards. The other multiple winners were: "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me" and "Cruel Intentions," which took two trophies a piece. Of course, at the MTV Movie Awards, it's not who wins, it's what the winners say backstage. In Reeves' case, it was this: "It's all good." All righty, then. Here's a complete rundown of the winners of the 2000 MTV Movie Awards, to be broadcast Thursday at 9 p.m. EDT/PDT on, yes, MTV: BEST MOVIE: "The Matrix" BEST MALE PERFORMANC
SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 15, 2000 -- Yup, he's the dad. Mick Jagger Wrinkled Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger, 56, today confirmed in sworn testimony that a baby boy born to Brazilian model Luciana Morad is indeed the result of his, er, handiwork. Speaking to New York court officials via the telephone from London, the rocker said he had no problem being listed as the father on the birth certificate of Lucas Maurice Morad Jagger, born May 18. No word if he had a problem with the whole "Maurice" thing. The out-of-wedlock birth -- he is no longer linked with Morad -- is proving costly to the mega-millionaire. First, it drove the final nail into his relationship with model/actress Jerry Hall. (The two formally split in July, annulling what most people thought was a nine-year marriage, but what they agreed was a nine-year nonlegal cohabitation. In any case, Hall walk
In a surprising move, the members of the New York Film Critics Circle, an association of film reviewers from major Manhattan-based newspapers and magazines, selected "Topsy-Turvy" as the Best Picture of 1999.Part biopic, part backstage drama, "Topsy-Turvy" is an opulent motion picture that focuses on the prickly relationship between librettist William Schwenk Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan. Mike Leigh was selected as Best Director for the same film, which now becomes poised with "American Beauty" (selected by the National Board of Review), "Three Kings" (the Boston Critics' choice) and "The Insider" (the L.A. Film Critics Association winner) as frontrunners in the upcoming Oscar race. The top acting honors were awarded to two performers who portrayed real-life figures. Veteran Richard Farnsworth was named Best Actor for his turn as Alvin Straight, a man who rode a tr
The awards season has officially kicked off, and "American Beauty" has its first trophy on the mantle. The dark satire was named Best Film of the year Dec. 8 by the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures. Directed by first-timer Sam Mendes and starring Kevin Spacey and Annette Bening, "Beauty" was released in September to widespread acclaim and solid box office. Anthony Minghella, the Oscar-winning director of "The English Patient," was named Best Director for "The Talented Mr. Ripley," starring Matt Damon and Gwyneth Paltrow, which was reportedly shown to the board in an unfinished print.
