  • Cash-strapped museum to sell first Mickey Mouse drawing

To some, it is the most significant auction in the world of cartoon art, bar none.

To others, it's just an unfortunate day in the life of a museum.

On Saturday, Guernsey's auction house will conduct an extensive auction of cartoon art, with most of the 700 works up for sale coming from the International Museum of Cartoon Art in Boca Raton, Fla. The museum, founded by Beetle Bailey creator Mort Walker, is home to more than 200,000 drawings.

The museum is selling one of it's most prized possessions - what may be the original drawings of Mickey Mouse - among its almost 600 items for sale. The museum is attempting to wipe out the almost $2 million it owes on its mortgage, as well as create an endowment for future operating expenses. Typical of the plight of many nonprofits, the museum has experienced funding problems that necessitate the sale

  • NEWSMAKERS: Red-Hot Regis Cashes In

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 8, 2000 -- It's good to be Regis Philbin. If you are Regis Philbin, you have "television magic." If you are Regis Philbin, you are "the hottest thing in television." And if you are Regis Philbin, you have a fat, new contract with your TV bosses.

The suits at ABC and parent-company Disney announced today that they'd inked Reeg to long-term deals to continue as host of the network's "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" and the Disney-produced syndicated morning talker "Live! With Regis & Kathie Lee."

In making the announcement, Buena Vista Television President Janice Marinelli said all that stuff about Regis being hot and having magic. Unfortunately, she didn't say anything about how much they're going to be paying Reeg. (Reports that Philbin had secured a $20 million-per-year deal out of ABC for "Millionaire" recently were denied -- by Philbin.)

  • The Material Girl Cashes In?

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 2, 2000 -- Madonna's "The Next Best Thing" could turn out to be the best thing at the box office this weekend.

"It's going to be a very lackluster weekend. Nothing's going to be too great," predicted one studio insider looking at tracking scores. The one possible exception: "Next Best Thing," starring the M One and Rupert Everett as a straight woman and a gay man, respectively, who raise a child together. In recent studio tracking data, the comedy-drama was listed as the No. 1 movie of choice by 8 percent of potential moviegoers -- up from 6 percent earlier in the week.

"It's a very positive sign and means that, maybe, it can get into the $8-10 million territory," the insider said. "If that's the case, it should be No. 1."

"The Next Best Thing's" only real competition, the insider added, is likely to be last week's No. 1 -- "The Whole Nine
