SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 23, 2000 -- If it was death that kept "ER" at the top of the primetime ratings heap for the third consecutive week, it was life -- after a close call with the grim reaper -- that brought record ratings to David Letterman's "Late Show" on Monday. While "ER" once again managed to fend off "Millionaire" mania, perhaps with a little help from Fox's Romanesque "Multimillionaire" debacle, the return of Letterman to late night had America tuned in, if only for now. Letterman drew a 9.3 preliminary overnight rating -- some 19 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research -- as he walked on stage at New York's Ed Sullivan Theatre to host the show for the first time since he underwent open-heart surgery five weeks ago. (The show, broadcast Monday, was taped last Friday.) Letterman's brush with death delivered his third-biggest audience since his 19
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 14, 2000 -- Roll out the red carpet, unleash the stupid pets and put Paul Shaffer back in his place -- for Dave's imminent return is here. That's right, all you Letterman fanatics, the indefinite postponement of the convalescing late-night talker's return is finally over as CBS and the "Late Show" higher power announced today that Dave is (absolutely and definitely) coming back to the talk show. Letterman will tape his first show in five weeks on Friday, the network said. It'll air next Monday. But don't expect to see Letterman's facetious grin every single night of the week -- not yet, anyway. According to the official word, Letterman will only be holding the "Late Show" court at a part-time basis for now -- he's tentatively slated to go on for two to three days next week with guest hosts -- Bill Cosby and the ever-eager Regis Philbin -
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 7, 2000 -- David Letterman or no, CBS is determined to milk those "Late Show" reruns and famous guest host offers for all they're worth. The network has announced that another week of Letterman reruns is in store for the "Late Night" time slot -- albeit with some special star-power favor. Starting tonight until Friday, famous people -- in the caliber of Jerry Seinfeld, Danny DeVito, Bruce Willis, Bill Cosby, and others -- will recount personal "Late Show" memories and Letterman-related special moments that would serve as openers to each show until the end of the week. "Late Show" fans need not worry about the whereabouts of their favorite talk show host. The weirdly eulogistic nature of these "backstage" conversations has nothing to do with the availability of the convalescing Letterman. Dave's slated to come back to the late-night talk show as
