HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 18, 2000 -- The American Film Institute is honoring funnyman Billy Crystal with its Star Award at the 2001 U.S. Comedy Arts Festival, Daily Variety reports. The seventh annual event will once again take place in Aspen, Colo., from Feb. 28 through March 4, organizers said Tuesday. The weeklong gathering showcases fresh comic talent, and details about the festival will be announced over the next few months. Crystal's credits include "Analyze This," "When Harry Met Sally" and "City Slickers." He's also a celebrated Academy Awards host and six-time Emmy winner. Past AFI honorees include Robin Williams, Steve Martin, Monty Python and Jerry Seinfeld.
Jurassic Park III's William H. Macy, to Hollywood.com, on how he and his wife, actress Felicity Huffman, have different styles in bringing up their daughter Sophia, who will be 1 years old on Aug. 1: "I'm not as cool as my wife is. She'll take a bath with Sophia, and Sophia will poop in the tub. It happened to me once, boy, and I'm telling you, I was out of that water in a nanosecond. Flic sits there going, 'Could you get me a towel?' and I’m going, 'Get out! Get out!' ... [Sophia] thinks I'm funny, so that's the best thing I take from it so far. She thinks I'm hysterical."
HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 1, 2000 -- Is he the new Howard Cosell? Or the same old, arcane reference-spewing, obtuse comedian Dennis Miller? It might be too early to say, but the former "Saturday Night Live" guy made his "Monday Night Football" debut as a gridiron color commentator, er, Monday night, helping broadcaster Al Michaels and former NFL quarterback Dan Fouts call the shots in the pre-season Hall of Fame game. Today, the reviews are in. How did he do? "The sports world, as we know it, has imploded," says Bill Plaschke, a Los Angeles Times sports columnist. "Tradition has been trashed, values have vanished." But Plaschke says that's a good thing ultimately. He liked Miller's references to the pope, his crotch jokes, his jokes about Jack Lord's hair and mentions of the Sword of Damocles. "Time flew. The boring became bearable," is how Plaschke puts it. In oth
HOLLYWOOD, July 24, 2000 -- Whether the MPAA or the PTA approve or not, vulgarity is here to stay. But whether Jim Carrey is here to stay or not, that’s another question. Carrey, who has had an indelible hand in shaping twisty-faced humor into a proud genre of its own, failed to hit the high water mark with his latest comedic foray, "Me, Myself & Irene." The Farrelly brothers-directed flick made a less-than-Carrey-like $24 million in its opening weekend and has grossed $83.1 million after five weeks. Not exactly a bomb, but in a summer that saw a $42 mil debut from a blatantly derivative flick called "Scary Movie", Carrey's no longer the undisputed King of Comedy. Until 1998's "The Truman Show" ($125.6 mil), it looked like the chameleon comedian could do no wrong. It all began with his 1994 breakthrough hit "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" ($108.3 mil), followed by "Dumb and Dumber"
HOLLYWOOD, June 14, 2000 -- So you think "Airplane!" is the funniest movie of all time? Or maybe one of the Monty Python flicks? Well, you're wrong, because according to the really smart people at the American Film Institute, "Some Like It Hot," the cross-dressing Tony Curtis-Jack Lemmon vehicle that's arguably a teensy-weensy bit unfunny, is the top cinematic laugh-maker of all time. The AFI's "100 Years, 100 Laughs" list -- ranking the, yes, 100 top U.S.-made comedies of the 20th century -- was revealed Tuesday night in a CBS special. Since only Hollywood products were eligible for consideration, the Monty Python boys never had a chance. "Airplane!" did, though. (It ranked No. 10.) Seemingly ensuring that one day "Big Momma's House" will be remembered as the stuff of legends, four gender-bending movies made the AFI's cut: the aforementioned "Some Like It Hot," "Tootsie
SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 20, 2000 - A serious announcement from MTV's resident wise guy. Canadian-grown comic Tom Green, 28, of the self-titled "Tom Green Show," is battling testicular cancer. "Entertainment Tonight" was taping an interview with the entertainer this afternoon at a hospital. Portions of it will air on Tuesday's episode. An "ET" spokeswoman said Green, known for outrageous stunts on his show as well as the 1999 novelty hit "The Bum Bum Song," appeared to be quite serious. Doctors have termed Green's cancer as being curable. "As a form of therapy and education, Green is preparing a one-hour special for MTV documenting his recent procedures, using his signature brand of humor to inform the public about cancer," publicist Marleah Leslie said in a statement. According to "ET," Green sought medical treatment following ShoWest, the movie-exhibitors' c
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 19, 2000 -- She set an extra-terrestrial free, set some houses on fire and set a new trend in Cinderellas. But who knew Drew Barrymore could make people laugh?
