HOLLYWOOD, Feb. 23, 2001 -- "Hannibal" continued to do killer box office business, finishing first for the third straight weekend. The R-rated thriller from MGM and Universal in association with Dino De Laurentiis held on to the top spot in its third week with a still-tasty estimated $15.8 million (-47%) at 3,292 theaters (+54 theaters; $4,800 per theater). Its cume is approximately $128.5 million. "Hannibal" had the highest per-theater average for any film playing in wide release last weekend. The film was co-financed by MGM, which is releasing it domestically, and Universal, which is distributing it abroad. "We think it's great, to say the least," MGM worldwide distribution president Larry Gleason said Sunday morning. "The international numbers are really good. Pop star Billie Piper and British media personality Chris Evans married Sunday during a secret ceremony in Las Vegas, a Virgin Radio spokeswoman told Reuters. Virgin Radio, where Evans hosts a morning program, reports the couple wed four months in advance to evade the media spotlight. Evans, 35, has been out of the media glare after a short-lived romance with ex-Spice Girl Geri Halliwell. In March, he fell in love with Piper, 18, and the couple bought a Victorian home together in London, where they lived. "She has a very old head on a lovely body. The age difference doesn't bother us in the slightest," Evans was quoted as saying.
HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 15, 2000 -- Is the man in black now the man in red? Hardly. It's doubtful that film star Will Smith is low on cash, as the star of blockbusters such as "Men in Black" and "Independence Day" is a sure bet. But there's definitely $60,000 less in his bank account after spending a week in Las Vegas to prepare for his role in "The Legend of Bagger Vance." The Associated Press says Smith and golf coach Ron Del Barrio spent quite some time, and money, at the gambling tables while they were in Sin City. Smith reportedly lost 60 grand in about 20 minutes, after which Smith made Del Barrio a promise. ``Ron,'' Smith said. ``I guarantee you this: You will never see me gamble again.'' Smith reportedly kept his promise and never went near another table while he was in Las Vegas. Maybe he can write it off as a traveling expense?
