  • A Very Big 'Gladiator'

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 21, 2000 -- If you didn't catch hunky Russell's Crowe's biceps in "Gladiator" the first time around, here's your chance to see them in an even bigger way: in an Imax theater.

DreamWorks Pictures has announced that it will re-release "Gladiator" beginning Wednesday at the large-screen theaters across the country, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film will be featured in theaters in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, Toronto and other cities.

The Ridley Scott blockbuster follows the re-release of "The Matrix" on Imax screens in September.

"Gladiator" was a big hit at the box office earlier this year, grossing $186.6 million domestically. But if you can't get out to see Crowe on the big screen again, the film is also being released on VHS and DVD today.

Producers Douglas Wick, David Franzoni and Branko Lustig accepted the best film award for "Gladiator," praising director Ridley Scott during their acceptance speech, who lost out on the best director prize to Ang Lee for "Tiger."

Besides best foreign film and best director, "Crouching Tiger" also won for music (Tan Dun) and costume design (Tim Yip). Of BAFTA and the United Kingdom, Lee said: "You've always been great to me. This is like a second home to me now."

“Gladiator” also won the Orange Audience Award for most popular film of 2000. Scott thank

A day after taking the Golden Globes top drama prize, the Ridley Scott-helmed Roman epic was named best picture at the sixth annual Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards on Monday.

Other BFCA winners -- including best director Steven Soderbergh and best actress Julia Roberts -- were announced in mid-November.

The organization is the largest film critics group in the United States and Canada.

  • 'Gladiator' Leads Globe Noms

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 21, 2000 -- The 58th Annual Golden Globe Awards is shaping up to be one heck of a testosterone-charged run.

Steven Soderbergh's "Traffic" and Ridley Scott's "Gladiator" have emerged as the frontrunners in this year's race for the Globes, each receiving five nods apiece as nominations for the annual bash were announced this morning by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in Beverly Hills, Calif..

Trailing closely behind are Cameron Crowe's semi-autobiographical rock flick "Almost Famous," "Chocolat," "Wonder Boys" and Soderbergh's "Erin Brockovich," each earning four nominations.

Soderbergh's drug trafficking drama (which has yet to bow in theaters) picked up almost all the prized loot with a nod for best picture (drama), best director, best screenplay for scribe Stephen Gaghan and a best supporting actor and actress (drama) mention for Benecio D

  • 'Gladiator,' 'X-Men' Bow Big on DVD

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 29, 2000 -- They were hits on the big screen and now they’re even bigger hits on DVD.

“Gladiator” and “X-Men” each took in $60 million in DVD sales and VHS rentals over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The estimates for “X-Men's” home video and DVD sales even surpassed the film’s opening weekend domestic gross of $57.5 million over the summer. The summer hit features an ensemble cast including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos and Anna Paquin.

“Gladiator’s” numbers, however, were most impressive considering the film, starring Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix and Connie Nielsen, isn’t available to purchase in the VHS format -– a format that most home movie watchers use.

Currently in the United States, there are about 9 million DVD players compare

  • Oscar Wins for 'Gladiator,' Roberts

There were a few surprises in the Academy Awards ceremony Sunday night, though for the most part the favorites came out ahead.

  • Meg Ryan Back With 'Gladiator' Guy

HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 15, 2000 -- Make up your mind, Meg! Photographs of Meg Ryan and Russell Crowe smooching it up in Los Angeles were published in Friday's British tabloids, sparking new speculation that their on-again, off-again relationship is back on.

That would make sense, since divorce proceedings between Ryan and husband Dennis Quaid appear to be proceeding, despite recent rumors that they'd patched things up.

Crowe and Ryan were first linked together in July, when they were seen dining and holding hands in England during the shoot of "Proof of Life."

That's when Quaid filed his divorce papers, but then Ryan made it interesting by dropping the "Gladiator" guy to reconcile with her husband. (Ryan and Quaid have an 8-year-old son, you know.) But soon after, Ryan, 38, filed her divorce papers.

    Aw, love in Hollywood!

  • Meg Ryan ... and 'The Gladiator'?

HOLLYWOOD, June 30, 2000 -- It's not really a split 'til the British tabs weigh in with their versions of things, is it? And because we are, we confess, weak to the ways of the British tabs, we bring you this: Recently separated Meg Ryan and "Gladiator" Russell Crowe are "incredibly fond of each other." Now, we're not sure if "incredibly fond" is stiff-upper-lip code for "hot and heavy," we just know that the U.K. tabs are dogpiling on this week's revelation that Ryan and longtime hubby Dennis Quaid have called a time out.

London's Sun says Ryan has been taken with Crowe, with whom she's shooting the flick, "Proof of Life," in (where else?) Britain.

"Meg and Ryan are extremely close ... They just click," a source tells the paper.

Ryan and Quaid's camp declined to detail the reasons behind the couple's separation after more than nine years of marriage.

  • The Sounds of the 'Gladiator'?!?

SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 5, 2000 -- It could be the fastest sell-out in the history of Hollywood. Russell Crowe, a member of Hollywood's A-list crowd for all of, um, three-to-four hours (coinciding with today's release of the can't-miss "Gladiator"), announced Thursday that he intends to head into an Austin, Texas, studio this summer to record a rock album.

Yes, in the fine tradition of now-that-I'm-a-star-I-can-sing-too celebrities (i.e., Eddie Murphy, Don Johnson, Patrick Swayze, etc.), Crowe said the working title of his collection is "Bastard Life of Clarity."

To be fair, Crowe has sung before. Since the mid-1990s, he's fronted a band name of 30 Odd Foot of Grunts. The gang has toured Australia and played a few stateside gigs.

We're sure he doesn't sound anything like Eddie Murphy.
