Some of the most brutal acts against ordinary citizens were committed by Japanese soldiers when they overtook Nanjing in 1937. At least 300,000 inhabitants of the city were executed, and the women were raped, then killed. Japan has steadfastly denied any wrongdoing, and its refusal to admit its actions has caused strained relations with other countries.
