Synopsis:
Before Jacqueline Susann published her best-selling novel "Valley of the Dolls," she was deteremined to find her place in the spotlight. When a friend told her that "talent wasn't everything" she embarked on a quest to find someone to promote her. She found Irving Mansfield, a manager and publicist who fell in love with her and came up with a crazy idea: write a book. When Susann protested she had no writing experience he gave her golden advice: "Write what you know." And with that she turned her personal dramas with crazy, drug-addicted, sex-craved hopeful movie stars into an engrossing book that featured taboo subject matter and a vocabulary that would shock a sailor. Shunned by publishers at first, Jackie's charm and committment to personally publicizing the book would eventually change the way books were written and sold. With this battle won, Susann would go on to face larger demons, including the pitfalls of fame and her rapidly deteriorating health.
