  • Mickey Mouse for sale ... again

The financially strapped International Museum of Cartoon Art will put a rare Mickey Mouse storyboard on the auction block for a second time in an attempt to resolve its cash crunch. The museum, located in Boca Raton, Fla., failed to find a buyer for the 36-panel storyboard drawn for the 1928 Walt Disney cartoon Plane Crazy the first time it was put up at auction May 19. The storyboard features the first drawings of Mickey Mouse, according to museum founder and Beetle Bailey comic creator Mort Walker. A new auction is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday, June 8, at the New York offices of Guernsey's auction house. The museum needs to sell the storyboard--which is estimated to be worth more than $3 million--to pay off a $2 million debt.

  • Cash-strapped museum to sell first Mickey Mouse drawing

To some, it is the most significant auction in the world of cartoon art, bar none.

To others, it's just an unfortunate day in the life of a museum.

On Saturday, Guernsey's auction house will conduct an extensive auction of cartoon art, with most of the 700 works up for sale coming from the International Museum of Cartoon Art in Boca Raton, Fla. The museum, founded by Beetle Bailey creator Mort Walker, is home to more than 200,000 drawings.

The museum is selling one of it's most prized possessions - what may be the original drawings of Mickey Mouse - among its almost 600 items for sale. The museum is attempting to wipe out the almost $2 million it owes on its mortgage, as well as create an endowment for future operating expenses. Typical of the plight of many nonprofits, the museum has experienced funding problems that necessitate the sale

The title marks the sixth time in seven years that the Magic Kingdom has captured the biggest slice of the domestic movie market.

Disney product accounted for 17 percent of all ticket sales, grossing more than $1 billion. The Mouse House, which had a rough year on Wall Street, nonetheless ruled Hollywood thanks to a pair of $200 million-plus hits ("Sixth Sense" and "Toy Story 2"), and a couple of kiddie superstars, "Tarzan" ($170.8 mil) and "Inspector Gadget" ($97.4 million).

Disney's dominant box-office performance came despite less-than-great performance from several front-line releases, including "The Insider," the critically acclaimed but commercially tepid tobacco-
