Synopsis:
Cinematographer Christopher Doyle has been called the only Westerner to have made a mark on the Hong Kong film industry. He has helped to create films of troubling, frenetic beauty through his long and acclaimed collaboration with director Wong Kar-Wai, with whom he has made a number of prize-winning films, including Chungking Express and In the Mood for Love. Orientations - Christopher Doyle: Stirred Not Shaken is a documentary that attempts to explore both the mind and career of the cinematographer, who was born in Sydney but has been based in Hong Kong for years. Doyle is seen at work with Wong -- who claims that he and the d.p. collaborate as much through music and beer as on screenplays -- and in the U.S., where he shot Gus Van Sant's Psycho and Barry Levinson's Liberty Heights. Although the documentary includes extensive footage and numerous interviews, Doyle is a laconic, somewhat eccentric subject, which results in the film being a portrait of an artist who, although fascinating, ultimately remains an enigma.
