Pavee Lackeen: The Traveller Girl (2005)

Synopsis

The life of Ireland's Travelers is viewed through the eyes of a ten-year-old girl whose journeys find her itinerant family frequently clashing with the more mainstream components of Irish culture in this drama that was the result of a collaboration between first-time filmmaker Perry Ogden and members of the Traveler community. Despite living in relative poverty, the proud Travelers hold steadfast to their belief that they carry on the Celtic tradition that has been since abandoned by modern society. Winnie (Winnie Maughan) is a young Traveler living in a ramshackle trailer with her mother and siblings in Ireland's barren industrial suburbs. While clashed with housing authorities and an educational system unequipped to deal with the wandering ways of the Travelers, each day brings a new challenge and Winnie's mother is about to negotiate the purchase of a new trailer for her family.
