Putoavia enkeleita (2008)

Synopsis

This earnest, Finnish-language psychodrama (with its distinct echoes of The Bell Jar and Frances) concerns Helena Viita (Elena Leeve), the daughter of two divorced writers. Though Helena harbors only the vaguest recollections of her childhood, she places her father on a pedestal and nurtures resentment against her mother, whom she blames for breaking up the family. Shortly after Helena learns of a biography her mom is writing, she suffers from a nervous breakdown and winds up in a mental institution; her mother, Aila (Elina Knihtila) then arrives from Sweden to tend to her daughter. When Helena reads the autobiography her mother has written (as a stage in her treatment) it whisks her back to the artistic world of her parents in the '40s and '50s and gives her a much different, much darker picture of her father than she ever had before.
