Ticket sales for R-rated films have plummeted since movie theaters, bowing to political pressure, began tightening their enforcement of age restrictions, the Washington Post reported Thursday, citing a study by research group MarketCast. The study concluded that "significant numbers" of children under 17, especially girls, were being deterred from seeing R-rated movies. The theaters' policies, the study said, caused the recent releases The Mexican, starring Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt, and Angel Eyes, starring Jennifer Lopez, to lose a major share of the audience that ordinarily would have been attracted to them, the study said. It estimated that the movie Tomcats, from Joe Roth's Revolution Studios lost 30 percent of its potential audience because of theater enforcement of age restrictions.

Each rating point represents just a bit more than 1 million homes.
Christopher Reeve has joined scientists in a lawsuit aimed at overturning a government decision to stop funding stem cell research, the BBC reports. Research funding was halted after ethical debates started over the harvesting of stem cells, usually taken from embryos left over after fertility treatments and from aborted fetuses. The lawsuit alleges that the George W. Bush administration has not gone through the proper channels necessary to stop the research. Reeve, who played the cartoon superhero Superman in four films, said that he believes stem cell research will allow him to walk again and should be resumed immediately. He has been a leading advocate of medical research since a horse-riding accident left him paralyzed several years ago.

Often referred to as “extreme football,” the new league puts a spin on the sport with more cameras and microphones, announcers seated in the stands, and unlimited access to locker rooms and huddles. The live broadcast won over every demographic and delivered the second largest Saturday night audience on any network this season, according to preliminary Nielsen reports. Saturday’s inaugural game between the Las Vegas Outlaws and the New York/New Jersey Hitmen was a huge hit with young adults, especially males, and helped NBC clench the first three nights of the make-or-break February ‘sweeps’ in both total viewers and the coveted 18-49 market. The strongest audience was male teens, with approximately a 32 share after an opening 39, which fits perfectly into NBC’s plan of
HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 31, 2001 -- Much like Super Bowl XXXV, last week's Nielsen race was a blowout. And CBS isn't stopping there. HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 28, 2000 -- Despite stellar ratings last week, NBC's coverage of the 2000 Olympiad is losing steam with viewers. A disappointing 18.6 million viewers tuned into the games on Tuesday night, according to the Neilsen ratings -- the lowest since the 1968 Tokyo games. In fact, a rerun of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire almost eclipsed NBC's coverage with a 15.4 rating. By comparison, the Sydney Olympiad is overall 9 ratings points behind the viewership of the Atlanta games, and 14 ratings points behind those held in Barcelona. Why is NBC taking a hit in ratings this week? In a word, Buffy. The WB's fall premiere of Buffy the Vampire Slayer bit into the Olympic coverage Tuesday night, with a rating of 3.2 million among males -- giving the WB a second-place finish. The overall ratings for Buffy this week set a record high for the series.

Gelman says that although there has been some talk about not replacing Gifford, "I think we all at some point want to settle down with somebody. ... HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 4, 2000 -- August is the time of year when TV pretty much just phones it in. NBC is running "The 10th Kingdom" again, for crying out loud! It's almost as if they don't want us to watch anymore. Or, maybe TV is just playing hard to get, like if it acts disinterested in us, we'll want it even more. Even some cable channels are getting into the act. On Tuesday, ESPN2 is running a recap of the Kansas City Chief's 9-7 1999 season. But at least the brainy channels that are good for us but no one watches are trying hard to fill the void. So this week, just to show the networks (and ESPN2) that they can't take us for granted, we've got a very special "Bravo-riffic" edition of Channel Surfer. On Friday, a judge in Malibu, Calif., ordered the rocker to the pokey for five days for parole violations. Today's reprieve meant he got sprung several hours ahead of schedule. So, what was the parole violation? According to Lee's attorney today, it was a glass of champagne downed to celebrate the new year. And while that's low-wattage compared with Tommy's usual M.O., any drop of alcohol is a no-no under his (now-extended) probation. Lee's lawyer also told reporters that it was estranged wife Pamela Anderson who reported Tommy's Y2K drinking to authorities. Lee, 37, is now due back in court Sept. 5 when he'll be told not to do bad again.
HOLLYWOOD, May 31, 2000 – Maybe they should have called it "Who Wants To Be A Sun-Stroked, Malaria-Stricken, Snake-Bitten, Unbathed, Humiliated Millionaire?" Instead, they called it "Survivor," and in case you haven't heard, it's a new "gameshow" in which 16 strangers are deposited on a tropical island near the equator, where they fend off disease, diarrhea and deadly animals for 39 days (with cameras in tow, of course). It premieres tonight at 8 p.m. (EDT/PDT) -– surprisingly, not on Fox, but on CBS. Here's the fun part: The object of the game is to win $1 million, and to do that, you have to be the last one standing when the supply of rats runs out. You pretend to like your castaway teammates, but every three days there's a vote to kick one person off the island, and you're sure as heck not gonna kick yourself off. Bickering and back-stabbing ensues. It's "Gilligan's Island" m
HOLLYWOOD, May 24, 2000 -- Now, it can be told: "Bambi" -- and his G-rated movie friends -- are bad for your fragile, little mind. A study published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association says G-rated animated movies aren't all kids' stuff. To reach a conclusion that startles no one who was scarred by watching Bambi's mother get pumped full o' lead, a pair of Harvard researchers watched 74 animated, G-rated features released from 1937 to 1999, from Disney's "Snow White" to Disney's "Tarzan." They found this: Every film contained at least one act of violence (defined as "physical contact" that seeks to injure or harm); one film contained as much as 24 minutes of violence (1998's "Quest for Camelot"); 62 percent of the films showed characters injured as a result of violence. On the plus side, "bad" people were much more likely to be killed in G-ra
HOLLYWOOD, May 23, 2000 -- Last week in TV ratings land, NBC threw in the kitchen sink with three hours of "Must-See" season finales and owned the top of the Top 10. Unfortunately, there are still seven days in a week, and NBC has just one sink. Thus, ABC, still running on high-octane Regis fuel, held on to win the overall week -- again. Here now, for your edification and amusement, the annotated primetime Top 10 rankings for the week of May 15-21, according to the good people at Nielsen Media Research. (Each rating point is worth a little more than 1 million viewers.) 1. "ER," NBC - 22.3 NBC needs to either find a gameshow more popular than "Twenty-One" or make every week Season Finale Week. Next week, the reruns start, and we get to see how last year's Thanksgiving episode fairs against "Millionaire." 2. "Frasier," NBC - 22.1 Ratings like this can be dangero
HOLLYWOOD, May 16, 2000 -- We're down to the wire in the May sweeps, and NBC really tightened this race up last week with yet another monster Thursday. With the Must See season finale triple-header coming this Thursday, do we smell a potential ABC upset in the offing? We certainly hope so. Because if that smell isn't "upset," then it must be us. And frankly, it's getting pretty unpleasant in here. But we digress. Here now is an annotated look at the Top 10 primetime shows for the TV week ended May 14, as determined by the fine folks at Nielsen Media Research. (Each rating point is worth a little more than 1 million viewers). 1. "ER," NBC - 22.1 This was Julianna Margulies' last episode as a regular. The show's rating probably would have been even higher had it not aired opposite an Arena Football game on TNN. 2. (TIE) "Frasier" (9 p.m., Thursday) NBC - 1
HOLLYWOOD, May 9, 2000 -- When last we checked in with ratings news, NBC had sent ABC a message with a loaded Thursday lineup. ABC responded with a step that would seem to foreshadow that "All Regis, All the Time" programming strategy we've been trying to warn you about. For the other networks, and for those of us who have to come up with fresh material about the same blasted show every week, this is perhaps our darkest hour. We can only hope and pray that it doesn't go any further than the current "Mostly Regis, Most of the Time." But in all honesty … What can stop it now? Here's the carnage report from the primetime front for the week of May 1-7, according to the fine folks at Nielsen Media Research. (Each rating point is worth a little more than 1 million viewers). 1. "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" (Tuesday), ABC -- 23.6 It was Celebrity Week on "Millionaire
SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 2, 2000 -- Down goes Regis! Down goes Regis! New champion! New champion! NBC shocks the world! Sure, in the TV ratings week that was, Regis still had two shows in the Top Five, but NBC showed some real fire to start off the May sweeps, placing six shows in the Top Ten, none of which were specials, and one of which wasn't even on Thursday night! Here are the Top 10 primetime shows for the week of April 24-30, according the fine people at Nielsen Media Research. (Each rating point is equal to a little more than 1 million viewers.) 1. "ER," NBC - 19.6 This is the culmination of a red-hot Thursday for NBC -- a night that saw the network place five shows in the Top 10 and at least five NBC executives dance around in their underwear. Fortunately, a camera crew captured the whole thing, and you will get to see it as part of a "reality-based" special o
Anthony Edwards SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 28, 2000 -- Well, if you were a network and your great hope for the future was, um, "Daddio," you'd pay through the nose for a proven, if aged, show, too. And so it has come to pass that NBC has reached a new pact with Warner Bros. to keep "ER" in its primetime lineup through the 2003-2004 season. Daily Variety says the Peacock will pay $8 million to $9 million per episode for the pleasure of retaining TV's top-rated drama series. While that sounds like a lot, it's actually a bargain. In 1998, after a round of contentious bargaining that saw Warner Bros. threatening to hijack the show to another network, NBC coughed up $13 million an episode to renew the series through the 2000-2001 TV year. So, why the discount now? Well, for one thing, the show is six going on seven (and eight and ...). For another thing, did we mention
SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 19, 2000 -- It's a week of superstars returning to the Top Ten! Dennis Franz is back, after a lengthy custody battle with Sela Ward over the 10 p.m. Tuesday timeslot. Many people apparently still love Raymond, even though he was starting to think, maybe ... you know, there might be someone else. And it's good to know that a classic clash of wills between Charlton "let my people go" Heston and Yul "let's see them make bricks without straw" Brynner can still pack 'em in front of the TV, year after year. Here now, for your edification and amusement are the Top Ten shows of the past week in TV, according to the fine people at Nielsen Media Research (each rating point represents a little more than a million viewers). 1. "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" (Tuesday, ABC - 18.7) ABC executives, concerned about losing some of their regular Sunday audie
SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 4, 2000 -- Remember when the Who said, "Meet the new boss! Same as the old boss!" And then Keith Moon kicked in his drum set just before it exploded (and Pete Townsend smashed his guitar just before losing most of his hearing)? Isn't it funny how relevant something like that can be today? Anyway, here's an annotated list of the Top 10 primetime shows for the TV week ending April 2, according to the fine folks at Nielsen Media Research. (Each rating point equals a little more than 1 million homes.) 1. "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" (Tuesday), ABC - 19.4 After a week off thanks to the Oscars, back to No. 1. Meet the new boss … 2. "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" (Thursday), ABC - 18.8 Same as the … Oh, forget it. It's not that relevant, and it's not even that funny. But try coming up with fresh observations about this freakin' show every week
SANTA MONICA, Calif. March 27, 2000 -- Yes, the Oscars were inescapable Sunday night. How could they not be? They only ran for, like, 10 (well, four-plus) hours. Early estimates this morning say 78 million incredibly patient and tolerant individuals watched all, or part, of ABC's marathon Academy Awards broadcast. In the nation's biggest markets, the show -- which marked the return of host Billy Crystal and the crowning of "American Beauty" as Best Picture -- pulled a 31.7 rating. If that number holds up when the final stats are released, it'll mean the telecast was down 1 percent from 1999. And while that's not bad, that would still represent a 22 percent fall off from 1998's ceremony, otherwise known as the "Titanic" coronation. Critical reaction to the telecast, meanwhile, was mixed -- as critical reaction is wont to be. In the Washington Post, Tom Shales said that th
SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 14, 2000 -- Americans are famous for having short attention spans. Americans are famous for having short atten … Oh, sorry, you looked like you weren't listening. You know, all this short-attention-span stuff comes from a pop culture that moves at the speed of light. The MTV generation takes its information in soundbites and seizure-inducing video edits. But, today, it is with great civic pride that we announce that America has finally found what it's been looking for. In fact, at a whopping eight months and counting, America could not possibly be paying more attention. We could not be more unblinkingly fixated if we were strapped down and our eyes propped open with toothpicks to Regis Philbin. Thanks, Reeg, from all of us. We are so proud. Here's an annotated look at primetime's Top 10 for the TV week of March 6-12, according to the g
SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 7, 2000 -- This week at the Nielsens, TV's Top 10 featured three sitcoms, one drama and one news magazine; the Top Five featured one game show -- guess which one? Is that your final answer? If we told you that Fox even hyped "Greed" with a special promotional stunt, would that change your answer? It would? Okay, then can we interest you in this lovely faux diamond pendant? Here's an annotated look at the Top 10 prime-time shows for the TV week of Feb. 28-March 5, according to Nielsen Media Research. (Each rating point represents a little more than 1 million TV homes.)"Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" (Wednesday), ABC - 20.7 rating You know, everybody enjoys a good "phenomenon" now and again, but we're starting to run out of Regis jokes here. "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" (Tuesday), ABC - 20 Maybe you've heard this one before,
SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 1, 2000 -- Apparently all it took was a good old-fashioned "death of a major character" to remind us all about the things in life that are really important -- like "ER."After the "Must-See" stabbing death of the good Lucy Knight (Kellie Martin) spiked the NBC medical drama to a big-time sweeps victory (and finally vanquished that blasted "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire"), enough grieving fans stuck around to help the show to another victory for the primetime ratings week ended Sunday."ER" just might be on to something. You know, that Very Special Episode of "3rd Rock From the Sun" featuring Very Special Guest-Star William Shatner only finished 65th last week. Maybe if they'd spilled a little blood. ... Played it for laughs (of course). ... Hmm. ...In any case, here's an annotated look at the Top 10 for the TV week of Feb. 21-27. (Each ra

HOLLYWOOD, June 9, 2000 – OK, let's get the cliché out of the way: "Who's the Black private dick that's a sex machine to all the chicks?" If you answered "Shaft," well, you're only half right. Because in the new "Shaft" (opening next Friday), Samuel L. Jackson doesn't get any booty. Sure, there's some lovemaking going on during the opening credits, and there's one scene where Jackson (as the titular Black private dick) picks up a female bartender by asking if she wants him to hold her, or to give her the "L.D." (and we're guessing that's not code for cheap long-distance rates). But when you recall that the original Shaft, Richard Roundtree, went to bed with at least two women in his three "Shaft" movies (and yes, you saw him in the sack with the chicks) -- including sexy Vonetta McGee and the woman who propositioned him by asking, "How long is your phallus?" -- J
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 24, 2000 -- Unfortunately, we have no interesting Leonardo DiCaprio tidbits to share with you today. Fortunately, we do have a rather lively item about Kate Winslet, who co-starred with Leo in "Titanic," meaning we're within our rights to drop Leo's name many, many times in this story!Good for us! Kate Winslet Anyway, about Kate Winslet -- she's pregnant, today's Hollywood Reporter says. The 24-year-old two-time Oscar nominee has been wed to filmmaker James Threapleton since November 1998. This is to be their first child. No word on Leo's reaction. Also no word if Leo heard the news, if Leo cares or if Leo plans to dine in or out tonight.Leo.As for Winslet, the actress isn't pulling off the career track for the mommy track. The Reporter says she's currently in final talks to star in the historical drama "Enigma" for dire

HOLLYWOOD, June 5, 2000 -- MTV kick-starts another spanking new season of "The Real World" on Tuesday. But besides the where (New Orleans), the who (see next graph) and the what (the roommates are supposedly asked to put together a public access TV show), the music channel has been decidedly tight-lipped about the ninth edition of the real-life soap. ROOMIE #1: Danny What we do know about the cast is this: There's the egomaniacal Ivy League alum Jamie (the cocky, privileged one), feisty Southern belle Kelley (the spoiled one), soul-searcher Danny (the sensitive, lost one), Mormon Julie (the devoutly religious one), Catholic hip-hopper Matt (the culturally paradoxical one), loudmouth Melissa (the Filipino-black biracial one) and the auspicious overachiever David (er, the black one). ROOMIE #2: David And surprise, surprise, there's also the requisite gay one (who is amon
