Synopsis:
Set in Scotland in 1917, near the end of World War I, the story follows the army psychiatrist William Rivers as he is assigned the task of treating eminent poet Siegfried Sassoon for shell shock. Sassoon has also published an article admonishing the leaders of the war movement from tranforming its goal from defense to aggression. Rivers has been encourage to find Sassoon unstable. However, while he tries to pursuade a retraction of the article, he only confirms the poet's sanity. If Sassoon does not retract, he runs the risk of being tried for treason.
