Sabrina (1995)

Sabrina (1995)

Synopsis

A remake of a 1954 Billy Wilder romance, this updated version of the play Sabrina Fair was directed by Sydney Pollack. Julia Ormond stars as Sabrina Fairchild, the daughter of a kindly chauffeur (John Wood) at the Long Island estate of the upper-crust Larrabee family. Sabrina has grown up enchanted from afar with the Larrabees' sparkling world of privilege and wealth, but she's especially enamored of younger Larrabee brother David (Greg Kinnear), a charming womanizer. After the once-plain Sabrina returns from a sojourn in Paris transformed into a remarkably poised and attractive young woman, she at long last catches David's eye. In a calculated effort to manipulate David away from her and into a more financially advantageous marriage, older brother Linus (Harrison Ford) pretends to woo Sabrina himself, but finds himself unintentionally falling in love.

  • TV STUFF: 'Sabrina' Pulls a Trick

SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 6, 2000 -- It's official: "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" has given the broomstick to ABC. The kid-friendly sitcom, starring Melissa Joan Hart, is bolting the alphabet for the kid-friendly climes of the WB, it was confirmed Wednesday.

The actually kinda-watchable "Sabrina" premiered on ABC in 1996. It leaves on its own terms -- and then some. Producers got a two-year deal from the WB. ABC was said to be "on the fence" about bringing the show back for a fifth season. The WB "Sabrina" is expected to air where the ABC "Sabrina" aired -- on Friday nights.

A FUN TIME TO BE HAD BY ALL: The off-Broadway hit "Wit," about a terminally ill doctor in the last stages of her terminal illness, will get the TV movie treatment via HBO, Emma Thompson and Mike Nichols. • TV STUFF: 'Witch' Way for 'Sabrina'?

SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 4, 2000 -- And for her next trick, "Sabrina, the Teenage Witch" will move to … the WB? Melissa Joan Hart Today's Daily Variety says ABC's hit comedy, starring Melissa Joan Hart as the title spell-caster, could be headed to the rival network next season.

The report says the show's makers rejected ABC's initial overtures to renew the series, balking at the offered money (a mere $1.3 million to $1.5 million per episode). The offer that's reputedly got their attention is one from the WB that would net them just $675,000 for each show but lock them into the schedule for two years.

"Sabrina" debuted on ABC in 1996. It's headed into its fifth season.

ABC wouldn't comment on the Variety report, saying only of "Sabrina": "It's still part of ABC's schedule."

Yeah, well, that much we had figured out.
