Secrets of Silicon Valley (2001)

Secrets of Silicon Valley (2001)

Synopsis

While the so-called "new economy" based upon the computer revolution made more than a few people multimillionaires (and a great number of others rich if not super-rich), many other people found themselves pushed into the economic margins along the way, and this documentary takes a look at race, class, and economic discrimination within America's high-tech industries. Directors Alan Snitow and Deborah Kaufman focus on two individuals who lend their personal perspectives on the booming technology industry. Raj Jayadev was a temp worker with Hewlett-Packard until his public complaints about poor working conditions, the company's reluctance to negotiate with unions, and its habit of issuing paychecks that were for less than the amount promised their workers led him to be fired; Jayadev continued to speak out for blue-color workers in the technology industry, presenting a speech on "high-tech sweat shops" to a hearing before the California State Senate. Magda Escobar, who helps train workers for jobs in the electronics industry, found herself dealing with similar complaints, as well as many firms' lack of respect for people of color. She helped found a non-profit group called "Plugged In" to help the unemployed and the disadvantaged find a place in an industry that had come to dominate California's economy, only to find her headquarters priced out of its Palo Alto neighborhood due to gentrification brought on by the expansion of Silicon Valley.
