Hollywood comic heavyweight Adam Sandler is sought after, as two rival studios have joined forces to make the next Sandler smash. Sandler’s next flick is planned to be an update of the 1936 Frank Capra classic, "Mr. Deeds Goes To Town." The original, about a simple country poet who inherits a windfall, moves to New York and chases away the Big Apple’s bad attitude, may have been fine for the time, but the remake will be "Sandlerized" and modernized. The $20 million-per-picture Sandler is so red-hot that both Columbia Pictures (which owns the comedian’s next script), and New Line Cinema (which has the rights to his next project), have put their heads together for a certified cash cow. Once the studios hammer out the details, Sandler will put the film on the fast track. But if you’re feeling Sandler-deprived, his "Little Nicky" is hitting theaters on November 10th.

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 5, 2000 -- Most of the country will have to wait 21 more days to see “Thirteen Days.” New Line Cinema has pushed back the wide release of Kevin Costner’s historical drama by nearly a month to avoid the high-profile competition it would have gone up against on its original launch date, Dec. 22. "Days" will now be released on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, Jan. 12, Variety reports. The film will instead get a limited release Dec. 22 in New York and Los Angeles for Oscar consideration. The Cuban Missile Crisis thriller still faces tough competition on Jan. 12 by films such as “Traffic” with Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, “Finding Forrester” with Sean Connery, “Antitrust” with Ryan Phillippe and Tim Robbins, Disney’s action comedy “Double Take” with Orlando Jones, and “O Brother, Where Art Though?” starring George Clooney. <
SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 12, 2000 -- Hollywood found lots of life on "Mars" this weekend as Buena Vista/Touchstone's "Mission to Mars" blasted off to about $23 million. "Mars" landed in 3,054 theaters with an out-of-this-world estimated $23.10 million ($7,559 per theater). Its per-theater average was the highest for any film playing in wide release this weekend. It was a victory as well for studio tracking studies, which had predicted a first-place finish in the mid $20 millions. For the previous three weeks, however, Hollywood pollsters had been overly optimistic about the openings of "Hanging Up," "Reindeer Games" and "The Next Best Thing." "Our marketing guys (under Marketing President Geoffrey Ammer) did such a fabulous job getting it open," Buena Vista Distribution President Chuck Viane said Sunday morning. SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 29, 2000 -- The only thing scarier than a serial-killer movie is a serial-killer movie with an NC-17 rating. Scary to distributors, anyhow. "American Psycho" So Lions Gate Entertainment and director Mary Harron have snipped part of a supposedly explicit sex scene from "American Psycho," the forthcoming big-screen version of Bret Easton Ellis' novel about decadence, murder and rich young New York types. The editing did the trick: The Motion Picture Association of America will withdraw the taboo NC-17 rating it had slapped on the picture in January, and give it an R instead.A spokesman for the distributor told Reuters that just "a few seconds" were snipped from a sexual tryst between the titular psycho-killer, played by Christian Bale, and two prostitutes. HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 6, 2000 -- Cold feet seems to be Hollywood's fall season ailment. Otherwise known as last-minute tweaking, the malady has hit the Nicole Kidman film "Moulin Rouge" as well as the new NBC comedy starring "Seinfeld" favorite Michael Richards. Daily Variety reports that the release date of "Moulin Rouge," a musical from director Baz Luhrmann ("William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet") and costarring Ewan McGregor, has been moved from late 2000 to summer 2001. The film, set in 19th century Paris, reportedly features scorching song-and-dance routines from flame-haired star Kidman, who plays a courtesan. We'll have to wait a little longer to see if Kidman and company can resurrect the long-afflicted musical genre. Publishers Helios Music Corporation has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Garbage allegedly that the band lifted lyrics from the 1968 hit "Bend Me, Shape Me" by American Breed. According to Rolling Stone magazine, the publishers claim that Garbage's "I Think I'm Paranoid," featured on their second album Version 2.0, has a similar chorus to the American Breed song. The lawsuit was filed May 11 in the U.S. District Court in the Central District of California. Garbage, now working on their new record, titled Beautiful Garbage, filed a lawsuit against their label, Universal Music Group, in January for declaratory relief, asking the court to free them from their contract with the record label.
The heated question surrounding the future of online music: who should be compensated? The answer could come as early as Thursday, according to Reuters, as music labels and music publishers square off on Capitol Hill to debate the issue before the House Subcommittee on Courts, the Internet and Intellectual Property. A supporter of the music labels' cause, Jonathan Potter of Digital Media Association, says: "Companies are trying to build legitimate online services to compete with Napster and the music publishers are the biggest stumbling blocks to that." An attorney for the music publishers' cause, Carey Ramos, argues that "the reality is that songwriters have been ignored--or taken for granted--in the debate over distributing music on the Internet."

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 23, 2000 -- Looks like Elizabeth Hurley is enjoying her autumn in New York. The British paper The Sun has published photographs of the "Bedazzled" star smooching a new beau, fueling talks that the 34-year-old supermodel turned actress has found love again. The male party in question is film director Steve Bing, who was behind a movie called "Every Breath" back in 1993 (he also executive produced "Get Carter" this year.) Hurley and Bing were rocking at Elton John's concert in New York on Saturday night, where the Sun photographs were snapped. Hurley was, of course, the longtime lover of Brit actor Hugh Grant. SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 8, 2000 -- It's good to be Regis Philbin. If you are Regis Philbin, you have "television magic." If you are Regis Philbin, you are "the hottest thing in television." And if you are Regis Philbin, you have a fat, new contract with your TV bosses. The suits at ABC and parent-company Disney announced today that they'd inked Reeg to long-term deals to continue as host of the network's "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" and the Disney-produced syndicated morning talker "Live! SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 2, 2000 -- Madonna's "The Next Best Thing" could turn out to be the best thing at the box office this weekend."It's going to be a very lackluster weekend. Nothing's going to be too great," predicted one studio insider looking at tracking scores. The one possible exception: "Next Best Thing," starring the M One and Rupert Everett as a straight woman and a gay man, respectively, who raise a child together. In recent studio tracking data, the comedy-drama was listed as the No. 1 movie of choice by 8 percent of potential moviegoers -- up from 6 percent earlier in the week."It's a very positive sign and means that, maybe, it can get into the $8-10 million territory," the insider said. According to the reports, the 34-year-old former bad-boy actor has signed a one-year, $2.75 million deal to replace Fox, who last month announced he was leaving at the end of the season to spend more time on his battle with Parkinson's disease. An ABC publicist could not be reached for confirmation of the deal. Sheen reportedly will receive around $125,000 per episode, which is healthy but not extravagant by television-star standards. Production also will shift from New York to Los Angeles per Sheen's request, industry insiders familiar with the terms of Sheen's pact tell Daily Variety. SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 14, 2000 -- Kidney surgery wasn't enough to keep Steven Spielberg from making an impassioned plea for diversity. The 53-year-old director skipped the red carpet arrivals but mustered the strength to make it to the podium at the 31st NAACP Image Awards on Saturday in Pasadena, Calif. Only a few days after having a kidney removed, the filmmaker -- looking no worse for his recent wear -- urged his peers in the industry to continue to "expand the opportunities of the portrayal of diversity in all medium." His call to action came after receiving the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People's Vanguard Award for his "pioneering courage to promote social justice through creative endeavors." "A couple of days ago, I was in the hospital,'' the director said. ``This is the first time I've been out since my operation and it feels like a dr
