She and He (1963)

She and He (1963)

Synopsis

Directed by Susumu Hani, this is the story of class barriers more than anything else. When the shacks next to a comfortable neighborhood are burned down, a young husband and wife discover that one of the victims was once a university student with the husband but has been living in poverty with a blind orphan and a dog. Even though she wants to be of assistance, the young woman's social consciousness does not help her to rise above the class distinctions inherent in their situations. Her social position as much as anything else keeps her from understanding the harm her aspirations, class and social standing are doing when she is in contact with the unfortunate young man.
