Spice World (1998)

Synopsis

Bob Spiers (director of TV's Absolutely Fabulous) directed this feature-film debut of the five Spice Girls -- Posh Spice, Sporty Spice, Scary Spice, Ginger Spice, and Baby Spice -- as the quintet challenges the London pop scene during five days before their first live performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Photojournalists follow as they travel from press conferences to practice sessions to photo ops, passing London landmarks in the comfort of their cavernous Spicebus and emerging in a musical cascade of color, trendy clothes, and blinding flashbulbs. Shot in 43 days, the film features cameos by everyone from Elton John and Elvis Costello, to Stephen Fry and Bob Hoskins.

HOLLYWOOD, March 9, 2001 -- Even as Melanie Chisholm, a.k.a. Sporty Spice, announced plans to leave British pop giants the Spice Girls to concentrate on her solo career, the group's spokesperson denied the group was breaking up.

"I don't intend to do any more work with the Spice Girls," Chisholm told Reuters on Thursday. "I've not been comfortable being in the Spice Girls for probably the last two years. It doesn't really feel that natural to me anymore."

But today Spice spokesman Alan Edwards denied the split, while conceding that the supergroup's future plans remain on hold while its four members pursue solo careers.

"Mel C has not left the Spice Girls and the Spice Girls have not split up," he told Reuters. "What Mel said was correct in that there are no Spice Girls plans at the moment. I think they will sit down and take a view at the end of the year, although

"We are stronger after being apart for a while and we are very happy to have been back in the studio," band member Mel C told the Reuters wire service.

PICKIN' AND GRINNIN': Folk music legend Pete Seeger can start fingerpicking again. According to news reports, Seeger's prized 55-year-old banjo, which disappeared earlier this month, was found alongside a road in Rosendale, New York, by
