Ta Rodina Akroyialia (1998)

Synopsis

Director Efthhymis Hatzis, whose parents migrated to the United States when he was two, has found himself drawn back to his country by a literary figure from an earlier epoch: Alexandros Papadiamantis whose meditative work seemed like an antidote to the fast pace of his New York existence. Based on a novella by Papadiamantis, the film narrates the long sea voyage of a man disdained by the woman he loved. After a shipwreck on a remote shore, he encounters three eccentric men in a cave -- each of them an outcast -- who tell their failed love stories with humor. Alexandros sees himself in them and realizes that he loved a fleeting vision and not an actual person. The film is beautifully shot by cinematographer Klidaras in the magical Greek island Skiathos, shimmering twilight serving as a metaphor for the internal landscape of the protagonist.
