HOLLYWOOD, Feb. 22, 2001 - One of the '70s' most influential spectaculars is coming back in a big way. Reuters has revealed that Bryan Singer, who scored a hit as the director of last year’s blockbuster “X-Men,” is going to be bringing the fan favorite series “Battlestar Galactica” back to television. Singer, who recently signed on to direct “X-Men 2,” will executive produce the pilot for the new series along with Tom DeSanto, and if the shooting schedule for “X-Men 2” permits, he’ll direct the series pilot, as well. As of yet, no network has been picked to air the pilot. “Battlestar Galactica,” which called on "Star Wars” for inspiration, aired on ABC from 1978-1980. While never a big hit, the series has become a cult favorite and a sci-fi convention regular. David Kissinger, the president of USA Television Production Group, which is producing the new series, tol
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Dec. 21, 1999 — Gotham City, it seems, still needs a hero. Ben Affleck, currently seen in "Dogma" and the upcoming "Boiler Room," is the latest name to be linked with the "Batman" movies. According to gossip columnist Liz Smith, Affleck is a "major contender" to play the Caped Crusader in Warner Bros.' latest "Batman" film. The franchise bottomed out in 1997 when Joel Schumacher's "Batman and Robin" earned a (relatively) disappointing $107.3 million at the box office. Batstar George Clooney joked that he may have killed the series. But au contraire: Warner Bros. is reportedly considering two concepts for the latest sequel: One based on the animated WB show "Batman Beyond," in which an older Bruce Wayne passes his Batsuit to a teen-ager, and another based on the comic miniseries "Batman Year One," which traced Wayne's initial transformation into the

News Corp.'s 20th Century Fox Film Corp. and Marvel Enterprises Inc. have filed competing lawsuits over the use of the superheroes The X-Men.
LOS ANGELES, Mar. 13, 2001 -- Morton Downey Jr., the seemingly surly and always opinionated talk show host who reigned over "Trash TV" in the 1980s, died of lung cancer and other respiratory problems on Monday night, according to family members. He was 67. Tracey Downey, one of Downey's four daughters, told KABC-TV, "The family is very grief stricken and very shocked right now. He was a wonderful, wonderful man, wonderful father. He will be deeply, deeply, deeply missed."Downey, a chain smoker for years, shocked viewers from behind a smoggy haze, occasionally blowing the smoke in the faces of guests whose comments perturbed him. When he lost a lung to cancer in 1996, he became an anti-smoking crusader. In his heyday, he was known as "Mort the Mouth," the host who mocked his sometimes bizarre guests as "slime" or "scumbucket" and argued frequently with members of hi
HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 21, 2000 -- Hey Batman, you're wanted back in the Batcave, pronto. And leave that funny-looking Robin kid behind. Say what, caped crusader? Daily Variety is reporting today that Darren Aronofsky, director of the visually weird-ass movie "Pi" and the forthcoming flick "Requiem for a Dream," has been hired by Warner Bros. to resurrect the Dark Knight and direct the fifth installment in the franchise. Aronofsky will also cowrite the screenplay for "Batman: Year One" with Frank Miller, upon whose popular graphic novel (titled "Batman: YO") the movie will be based. The story follows a younger Bruce Wayne in his first year as Batman, complete with the trials and tribulations of a new superhero. Now the question remains: Who will play Batman? A few weeks ago, rumors circulated that Aronofsky was courting Brad Pitt for the part, but Pitt's camp late
HOLLYWOOD, June 5, 2000 -- We have seen the future Robert Urich and his name is Jason Bateman. Yes, just as the oft-employed Urich kept turning up on TV series ("S.W.A.T.") after TV series ("Vega$") after TV series ("Spencer for Hire"), so goes the former "Hogan Family" demi-icon. Word comes today that CBS has ordered six episodes of "Kiss Me, Guido," featuring (natch) Bateman, as a midseason replacement for the 2000-01 season. In "Kiss Me, Guido," Bateman, now 29, will play a gay guy rooming with a straight guy (Danny Nucci). Hijinks ensue. It's based on the 1997 indie comedy of the same name. For Bateman, "Guido" will be the actor's eighth career series, dating back to a season-long run on "Little House on the Prairie" in 1981. To top Urich, he'll have to get cast in another series, get canceled again, get cast in another series, get canceled aga
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., May 11, 2000 -- Touchy, touchy, touchy. All Roger Christian wanted to do was talk about his new movie. All the reporters wanted to do was ask him about the film's rumored ties to Scientology, the religion of choice for star and co-producer John Travolta. Not surprisingly, the long-haired English director seemed slightly annoyed, if not flustered, on Wednesday when journalists at a media junket in Beverly Hills, Calif., at the Four Seasons Hotel pressed him for answers about alleged subliminal messages in "Battlefield Earth," which opens Friday. Christian, in fact, ended at least one round-table session accusing the media types of wasting his interview time with Scientology stuff -- even though, once he got started on the subject, he rarely talked about anything else himself. "When I came on this project, John Travolta personally told me, 'T
