HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 29, 2000 --Quentin Tarantino, once the hottest director around, has reappeared after a long absence from the movie world.Tarantino’s next project will be the “revenge film,” "Kill Bill," which he is writing and will direct. “Bill” is set as a starring vehicle for Uma Thurman. Tarantino and Thurman are clearing their schedules for a pre-strike production start in the spring, although an official deal has yet to be made, sources said. Tarantino and Thurman worked together on 1994's "Pulp Fiction," for which Tarantino and Roger Avary won an Oscar for original screenplay and Thurman was nominated for supporting actress. Tarantino has another film in the pipeline--an epic World War II drama for Miramax, but the company would neither confirm the story line nor start date. The film promises to be bigger, better and more disturbing than ever. Coppola has added nearly an hour of footage to the new version of the 1979 war epic. In a statement Coppola said that the new version is three hours and seventeen minutes long, and does not re-use scenes left out of the 1979 release. Instead it was re-edited using original material. Coppola calls the new version of the film "a more disturbing, sometimes funnier and more romantic film, whose historical perspective has become more forceful." NEW YORK, April 4, 2000 -- In yet another chapter of "How Infamy Feeds Fame," accused shoplifter and critic/writer/celebrityhound/bon vivant Rex Reed is seeing his own star rise as a result of being busted for allegedly lifting CDs from a New York Tower Records. Since his humiliating arrest in February, Reed has been featured in a full-page story in Fan, a freebie paper in Los Angeles. The article, "Who is Rex Reed Anyway?" was a kind bio of the seasoned writer. The Fan writer, not stopping with his rose-tinted portrait, went so far as to speculate that Reed, as he himself maintained, might have stuffed the unpaid-for CDs into his clothing in an absent-minded fog. (The "fan"/journalist no doubt missed a New York Post report that one of the CDs was packed into the waistband of Reed's pants.) Reed has also just popped up in ads for New York's critically acclaimed Off Broad
HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 6, 2000 -- The firestorms surrounding that little Internet music-swapping company have been flamed again. The word is that both Dornemann and Zelnick weren't happy with the company's decision to restructure their positions and diminish BMG
NEW YORK, NY, Feb. 15, 2000 -- The news broke Sunday in New York newspapers and on Time Warner Cable's New York 1 channel that film critic/columnist/actor Rex Reed was arrested Saturday for allegedly shoplifting three compact discs. National coverage of the alleged crime continued Monday in such publications as USA Today. Reed was apprehended by security officers at a Tower Records store near his apartment for allegedly tucking CDs by Mel Torme, Peggy Lee and Carmen McRae into his jacket without, as authorities maintain, paying for them. Sources suggest Reed, who currently writes an entertainment column for The New York Observer, could have sustained the financial hit of paying for the items. He lives at the Dakota, one of Manhattan's most expensive and exclusive apartment buildings (John Lennon was shot there); owns a spread in an elite corner of rural Connecticut; and,
NEW YORK, N.Y., Dec. 27, 1999 -- We hear that Edward Norton ("Fight Club") may step into Paramount's crime actioner "The Score" as the young hood who locks horns with the older thief played by Robert De Niro. HOLLYWOOD, May 9, 2000 -- It's easy to see what Angelina Jolie sees in Billy Bob Thornton. Why, clearly he's "the sexiest [expletive deleted] ... creature that ever lived." So says Jolie in an upcoming interview in Talk magazine. The chat was conducted before Jolie, 24, and Thornton, 44, tied the knot Friday in Las Vegas. But even before she became Mrs. Billy Bob No. 5, Jolie was enamored of the actor/writer/director. Says Jolie: "I am madly in love with this man till the day I die." The couple met on 1999's "Pushing Tin," where they played husband and wife. But Jolie says the love affair was not played out among the onset trailers. (Thornton was linked with Laura Dern at the time.) "I just went on with my life," Jolie says of the movie, "but I never really forgot [Billy Bob]." The world's sexiest creatures, after all, are unforgettable that way.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 5, 2000 -- Despite all the hype, Madonna came in second best at the weekend box office.Studio tracking studies predicting a first-place opening for Paramount's "The Next Best Thing," the romantic comedy/drama teaming the Material Girl with Rupert Everett, were wrong. Instead, top honors went for the third consecutive weekend to Warner Bros.' "The Whole Nine Yards."Bruce Willis "Yards," the R-rated hit comedy from Warners, Morgan Creek and Franchise Pictures, held strongly in its third weekend with an estimated $7.31 million (-24%) at 2,793 theaters (-117 theaters, $2,617 per theater). Its total is approximately $38.5 million.Directed by Jonathan Lynn, "Yards" stars Bruce Willis and Matthew Perry."Unbelievable," Warner Bros. distribution executive Jeff Goldstein said Sunday morning, delighted with how well "Yards" was ho
Hollywood's advance radar system fizzled this weekend as "15 Minutes" failed to oust "The Mexican" from first place. Although insiders were right in predicting a sharp second week drop for DreamWorks' R-rated drama "The Mexican," they were wrong about it losing top honors. "Mexican" held on to first place with a less sexy estimated $12.13 million (-40%) at 2,959 theaters (+8 theaters; $4,100 per theater). Its cume is approximately $38.3 million. "Mexican" reportedly only cost about $40 million since its two superstars worked for much less than their usual salaries. Directed by Gore Verbinski, "Mexican" stars Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts. New Line's R-rated drama "15 Minutes" kicked off in second place with a solid estimated $10.48 million at 2,337 theaters ($4,482 per theater). "The Wedding Planner" was still living happily ever after in first place this weekend. The PG-13-rated romantic comedy from Columbia Pictures and Intermedia Films continued to show great legs in its second week with a shapely estimated $11.0 million (-19%) at 2,785 theaters (theater count unchanged; $3,950 per theater). Its cume is approximately $28.2 million. "Down 19%. You couldn't hope for better than that," Sony Pictures Entertainment worldwide marketing & distribution president Jeff Blake said Sunday morning."It's turning out absolutely the best you could have possibly hoped for -- number one two weeks in a row and Valentine's weekend coming up and Presidents' holiday after that. We certainly now are believers that we'll be in excess of $50 million (in domestic theaters). This is a very profitable picture for both us and Intermedia." Jere Hausfater, pr
HOLLYWOOD, June 23, 2000 -- If we can call Fox's "Titan A.E." a bomb (and since the $80 million toon only made $9.3 million last weekend, let's do just that), then did its shrapnel take out a studio chief? Officially, Fox Chairman Bill Mechanic resigned Thursday to launch his own film company. Unofficially, the word is that Fox honchos were none too happy with Mechanic's recent string of un-hits: "Fight Club," "Anna and the King" and the aforementioned "Titan A.E." Of course, Mechanic is also bailing before Fox opens one of its seemingly can't-miss properties: "Me, Myself & Irene" with Jim Carrey. "The studio is in excellent shape with a strong summer lineup and terrific product into next summer," Mechanic said in a statement, "and so I feel now is the time to pursue other personal ambitions." No time like the present -- and before another potentially troublesome
Strong openings for "The Mexican" and "See Spot Run" sent "Hannibal" south of the box office border after three weeks in first place. DreamWorks' R-rated drama "The Mexican" kicked off to a record-setting estimated $20.3 million at 2,951 theaters ($6,879 per theater). Its powerful box office punch proved audiences cared more about Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts' superstar luster than the film's lackluster reviews. "The Mexican" had the highest per-theater average for any film playing in wide release last weekend. "For the first week in March, this is the biggest opening ever," DreamWorks distribution head Jim Tharp said Sunday morning, noting that it beats the $17.2 million opening for "The Hunt For Red October" when it surfaced on March 2, 1990. "It's one of the bigger March openings. Last year, on March 17, 'Erin Brockovich' did $28.1 million." "It
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 29, 2000 -- The only thing scarier than a serial-killer movie is a serial-killer movie with an NC-17 rating. Scary to distributors, anyhow. "American Psycho" So Lions Gate Entertainment and director Mary Harron have snipped part of a supposedly explicit sex scene from "American Psycho," the forthcoming big-screen version of Bret Easton Ellis' novel about decadence, murder and rich young New York types. The editing did the trick: The Motion Picture Association of America will withdraw the taboo NC-17 rating it had slapped on the picture in January, and give it an R instead.A spokesman for the distributor told Reuters that just "a few seconds" were snipped from a sexual tryst between the titular psycho-killer, played by Christian Bale, and two prostitutes. HOLLYWOOD, May 24, 2000 -- It’s the kiss that’s on everyone’s lips this week. After a season of teenage angst and longing, tonight’s season finale of “Dawson’s Creek” (8 p.m. EDT/PDT, WB) features the first passionate homosexual kiss between two men to ever take place on primetime television. In the episode, titled “True Love,” Jack McPhee (Kerr Smith), who came out last season after briefly dating Joey Potter (Katie Holmes), shares an onscreen kiss with friend-turned-boyfriend Ethan (Adam Kauffman). No less than the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation has branded the smooch "historic." And while the kiss between Jack and Ethan might indeed be primetimes's first romantic kiss between two men, it's hardly the first gay kiss on the tube. Herein are some examples of primetime television’s gay and lesbian smooches: "Melrose Place": On May 18, 1994, Matt (Dou
HOLLYWOOD, May 17, 2000 -- We'll always have "Walker, Texas Ranger." Yes, "Freaks and Geeks" may be (and was) flunked; "Sports Night" may be (and was) axed, but Chuck Norris is forever. CBS today renewed the action series for an eighth season. You know how long "I Love Lucy" ran? Seven seasons. Perhaps if Lucy had had some of that Chuck Norris magic ... In other CBS-related fall TV news today, the network unveiled a schedule aimed to serve its current shut-in audience (renewing the older-skewing "Diagnosis Murder," "Nash Bridges," "Walker," "Becker," etc.) while building its future shut-in audience (launching a sitcom starring Bette Midler, icon of the graying baby boomers). Among the series being shown the exit door were: "Martial Law," "Early Edition," buzz favorite "Now and Again" and never-quite "ER" rival "Chicago Hope" (plugged pulled after six seasons). Bi

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Jan. 21, 2001 -- One thing remains clear after tonight's 58th Annual Golden Globe Awards: There was a definite lack of a dominant film on the block. Though certain sure bets did come out victorious, no single film was able to sweep the Globes, leaving the upcoming Oscar race as wide open as it was before. Heavy contenders "Traffic," "Almost Famous," "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "Gladiator" all took home two Globes apiece at the annual star-studded event. As expected, Julia Roberts won the award for best actress in a movie (drama) for her work in "Erin Brockovich". However, she was visibly surprised when "Brockovich" director Steven Soderbergh went home empty-handed. "I was shocked, actually," Roberts said backstage. "I suppose when I presented the best director and Steven [Soderbergh] didn't win for either film ["Traffic" and "Erin
HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 30, 2000 -- It's the scoop of the (admittedly, very short) century, and the mainstream media are clueless! Madonna is already married. Surely you know about the British Sun report that says Madonna and her new baby's daddy, British director Guy Ritchie, plan to stop living in sin by the end of the year. Bollocks. It's just a sham. We know the real story. We're just amazed that the only folks out there who know the truth are the owners of a little Madonna fan site. Yes, in a shocking story titled "The Royal Wedding," the sleuths at Mer-Girl.com report that the nuptials took place July 1 in London. Needless to say, we were impressed by this feat of journalism. But how the heck did a mere fan site get an exclusive, besting the likes of People magazine? Not only do they have pictures of the wedding but a sampling of the guest list (Wil
HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 29, 2000 -- They’re just dogs, right? Wrong! Actually, they’re Dalmatians. And if what animal-rights activist Teri Austin tells Hollywood.com is anything to go by, the spotted canines are specifically "a large breed intended to be bred as working dogs. They need a lot of exercise, and they get anxious when they’re confined to a yard. [Plus,] they shed a lot of hair." Austin and her dog-loving co-horts in the Amanda Foundation took that information to Disney's doorstep Monday, staging a demonstration and press conference outside the movie studio's headquarters in Burbank, Calif. Why? They want the Mouse House to take responsibility for its portrayal of the spotted pooches in the upcoming film "102 Dalmatians." Activists want the studio to 1) add a disclaimer at the beginning and the end of the film, elucidating the public about the real nat

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 7, 2001 -- Are Rod Stewart’s days of partying like a rock star over? Apparently so after what he told a German newspaper after another late night out, Reuters reports. ``I don't think I can take it any more,'' the 55-year-old said. ``The wild times are over for me. I'm husbanding my resources a lot more.'' The split with his wife, Rachel Hunter, and undergoing thyroid surgery last year made the rock veteran reassess his life, Stewart went on to say. But he also says he’s convinced he hasn’t lost his sex appeal. ``I'm still very presentable, but I just can't keep up with Mick,'' he said, referring to Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger. ``He has an unbelievably small backside and that's what women go for.''

But don't expect the city's residents to rejoice: Some of the irked neighbors have hired legal representation to fight the proposal and have vowed to stand firm unless the construction is dramatically scaled back. HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 1, 2000 -- Everyone knows how methodical, thorough and tight are the legendary security measures taken to protect the "Star Wars" franchise. So, how did some greedy fanboy get his dirty hands on a copy of the "Star Wars: Episode II" screenplay? We say "greedy" because the unidentified culprit who says he has purloined the prized script isn't offering it (or even a synopsis) gratis to the fan universe. This guy wants $100,000. "Greedy" because the actions of this money-hungry script thief have put one of the best Web sites for "Star Wars" info in a difficult situation. The story, first reported by columnist Jeffrey Wells of Reel.com, concerns TheForce.net, a megapopular, fan-run "Star Wars" site. HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 21, 2000 -- Some call it magic, but we say it's the ultimate revenge of the four-eyed nerd. As promised, Warner Bros. today introduced us to Harry Potter - or, more precisely, to 11-year-old Daniel Radcliffe, who'll play the world's most famous kid in the studio's forthcoming big-screen adaptation of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." The lucky kid is an utter unknown who, thanks to the signature circular-framed glasses and hair, bears more than a passing resemblance to the fantasy book hero. "We saw so many enormously talented kids in the search for Harry," Chris Columbus, the flick's director, says on the Warners Web site (www.wb.com). HOLLYWOOD, August 14, 2000 – When you're an official Emmy voter for the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, you've got a lot of TV to watch. So, they'd better give you enough time to watch it. According to Variety, it's the first glitch in the new at-home Emmy balloting process that the Academy decided to try in response to criticism that the old balloting procedure, wherein a blue-ribbon panel chose the winners, was too conservative.

And for those without the slightest idea, it is ABC's own copycat version of "Survivor" -- where 10 real-life people must figure out who among them is the titular "mole" planted by the show, while they complete a series of "Road Rules"-esque tasks around the globe. As with other reality gameshows, someone wins a million bucks at the end. Seizing the chance to deceive and infiltrate a show which is based upon the idea of, well, deception and infiltration, I trotted down to the show's open call casting Saturday at Café Tu Tu Tango on the touristy Universal CityWalk, just north of downtown Hollywood. Upon arrival, I was given an application, a pen, a numbered sticker and a place in line - which, for
HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 10, 2000 -- Edward Furlong, the kid who first uttered legendary action-movie cliches such as "Hasta la vista, baby," "Eat me, dickwad" and "no problemo," is returning to his roots. Daily Variety says the 23-year-old actor will reprise his role as John Conner in the James Cameron-less "Terminator 3," which is now in the works. Furlong -- at the fertile age of just 12 -- blasted into Hollywood in his maiden role in "Terminator 2: Judgement Day." With no previous acting experience whatsoever, the Southern California kid was literally plucked off the streets of Los Angeles and put in the 1991 sci-fi blockbuster. Furlong now has 13 films under his belt, and he has been pretty indie-minded during his career, shunning big-budget beasts in favor of smaller projects such as campmeister John Waters' "Pecker" (1998), "American History X" (1998) and the 1970s proto-m
HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 9, 2000 - It's the biggest thing to hit the tube since ABC hired some short guy to give away $1 million three times a week. It has no star power, no plot, and a comparatively meager giveaway of a million bucks over the course of 13 weeks. So, you've gotta wonder: what is it about "Survivor" that has kept our proud nation faithfully tuned-in? And, you've also gotta wonder: who among us is doing all the tuning-in? Naturally, we took it upon ourselves to find the answer. Our findings: Yes, a lot of people might be watching "Survivor," but hey, not everyone does it out of love. While the serious, die-hard "Survivor" camp embraces the show like a religion, for every fanatic there's at least one person who finds the show to be -- what's the saying? -- "so bad, it's good." How do we know? Well, we talked to a couple of them. Take, for example, survivorsu
HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 3, 2000 -- Time to get those PTA and office betting pools fired up again. As was made plenty clear to a "Survivor"-whipped TV nation last night, Gervase (Peterson), the island's resident slacker and 30-year-old basketball coach from Philadelphia, became exile No. 10 on the dog-eat-dog show. Peterson's banishment puts an end to a prevailing rumor plaguing the CBS castaway-reality series. You know, the one about Gervase being the $1 million jackpot winner. It started a few weeks ago, with an alleged leak posted by a hacker on the anti-"Survivor" Web site, the onomatopoeic www.survivorsucks.com. The cyberspace cowboy said he had hacked into the official CBS "Survivor" site and discovered the million-dollar scoop. CBS officials denied it, but the rumor prevailed, right up until the Tribal Council's ballots were counted at the end of Wednesday night's
HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 2, 2000 -- What's so funny about fat people? In the old days, the singing fat lady signaled the proverbial end of the show. But in Hollywood today, the fat lady -- and the fat guy, and the fat kid, etc. -- has become a signal to start the laugh track. Consider this: Eddie Murphy plays not one, not two, but a whole clan of fat people in "Nutty Professor II: The Klumps." Martin Lawrence dons drag as a fat grandma in "Big Momma's House." Heavyweight John Goodman dances on a bar top in "Coyote Ugly." Yes, we laugh at this stuff. The proof's in the pudding, like the $110 million that "Big Momma" has grossed so far and a $42 million opening for "Klumps." But the questions remains. What are we really laughing at, and why? "I don't think there's any question that the humor in these films are linked to the characters being fat," says Chris Crandall
HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 2, 2000 -- Duran Duran’s camp says it was a typo. But one out-of-work L.A. machinist says it was a royal pain in the neck. It seems the British rock band posted Cornell Zachary’s phone number on their Web site by mistake. Duran Duran just wanted to sell some T-shirts and CDs. Zachary just wanted to get some sleep. But that was next to impossible with round-the-clock calls from Duran Duran fans from all over the world who called his house. Zachary made a call, too, to his lawyer. He filed a lawsuit against the band saying he suffered life-threatening high blood pressure episodes, sleep disturbances and other permanent health problems. And oh yeah, that didn’t help his broken ankle at the time, either. Band member Nick Rhodes spoke through his publicist saying the matter was being taken care of by their lawyers and could not comment while th
HOLLYWOOD, July 27, 2000 -- We have reached Ground Zero. Friday at 9 a.m. Eastern Standard Time, Kathie Lee Gifford makes her final appearance as host of "Live! With Regis & Kathie Lee," and thus ends a chapter in daytime TV history. Do we care? Of course we do. Because for the past 12 years, Kathie Lee has arguably been America's most intimate celebrity. She's shared with us her good times and bad times, the fluctuations in her fertility cycle, her kids' growing pains (and potty habits), her life with adultering sporstcaster-husband Frank Gifford, and her oft-unpopular business ventures. "The I Hate Kathie Lee Gifford Book" But, despite her "I'm-just-a-normal-person" visage, Kathie Lee Gifford has received the kind of mega-exposure only afforded to uber-celebrities. At one time or another her face has loomed over Wal-Mart shoppers buying her modestly priced
HOLLYWOOD, July 26, 2000 -- The truth is out there: Are Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston getting married this weekend? And an even bigger truth is out there: If they are getting married, then why the heck weren't we invited? If the rampant rumors are true, the wedding will take place this weekend in the tony, beach blanket bingo city of Malibu, Calif. The British Sun tabloid was first to deliver the matrimonial shocker last week, followed by well-connected stateside gossip columnists who say the invitations have been sent and the cake has been ordered. Meanwhile, protocol-observing entertainment news outfits (us included) checked with the actor's people, who told us the scoop is bogus. Do we believe it? Not for a moment. Not when we've heard the rumor about Gwyneth Paltrow crying when she heard the news. And not when we so obviously were dissed, omi
HOLLYWOOD, July 24, 2000 -- Whether the MPAA or the PTA approve or not, vulgarity is here to stay. But whether Jim Carrey is here to stay or not, that’s another question. Carrey, who has had an indelible hand in shaping twisty-faced humor into a proud genre of its own, failed to hit the high water mark with his latest comedic foray, "Me, Myself & Irene." The Farrelly brothers-directed flick made a less-than-Carrey-like $24 million in its opening weekend and has grossed $83.1 million after five weeks. Not exactly a bomb, but in a summer that saw a $42 mil debut from a blatantly derivative flick called "Scary Movie", Carrey's no longer the undisputed King of Comedy. Until 1998's "The Truman Show" ($125.6 mil), it looked like the chameleon comedian could do no wrong. It all began with his 1994 breakthrough hit "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" ($108.3 mil), followed by "Dumb and Dumber"
HOLLYWOOD, July 13, 2000 -- Fake shark fins, anyone? The marketing folks at Universal Home Video have been ticking off SoCal beachgoers, plastering lifeguard stands and trash cans with "Jaws" (1975) posters as part of a national ad campaign to plug the flick’s 25th anniversary video and DVD release. Critics of the ad say that the posters -- with that famous painting of a shark approaching an unsuspecting swimmer -- freak out children and could be misleading to non-English speakers. Universal has promised to nix the ad campaign if the hullabaloo continues. Meanwhile, the people at the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors, who OK'd the publicity stunt, told the Los Angeles Times that the complaints arose because "everybody isn’t familiar with the movie." And that’s where we come in. How many people are really in the know when it come
HOLLYWOOD, July 11, 2000 -- Remember that old Quaker Oats Life’s commercial where a pudgy-face kid named Mikey complacently stuffs his face with cereal? If you have no freakin’ idea what we are talking about, you will soon enough. Quaker Oats has relaunched the vintage ad campaign in full-assault mode and, for a limited time, it will be megascreened in New York’s Times Square, on the tube and on the Life Cereal Web site (www.LifeCereal.com). The so-called "Hey, Mikey!" spot (which originally aired from 1972 to 1984) is considered one of the most successful ad campaigns ever. The high concept goes like this: 1) Three brothers are sitting at the breakfast table. 2) The two older kids wonder if the bowl of Life cereal placed in front of them tastes good. 3) They summon their little brother, Mikey, to taste-test the food, and the famous line, "He won't eat it. HOLLYWOOD, July 11, 2000 Finally, the truth is out there: The android-hunting antihero Rick Deckard Harrison Ford played in 1982’s "Blade Runner" was - unbeknownst even to himself - actually a "replicant," a catchy name for a genetically engineered humanoid android. But this revelation - straight from the mouth of Ridley Scott, and divulged in a recent British TV documentary - is hardly as Earth shattering as the director may have expected. As it just so happens, a lot of people figured it out for themselves during the past 18 years. Like, all the actors. "We knew about [Deckard being a replicant] all along. That was supposed to be the original idea, but they didn’t cut it that way because the studio said that we couldn’t have the hero not being human," actress Sean Young, who played Rachael, the lovely android femme fatale, tells Hollywood.com in an exclusive interview
HOLLYWOOD, July 6, 2000 -- Is the "Lethal Weapon" guy not so lethal anymore? Or, are American moviegoers (shame on us!) more interested in big disasters and special effects than in Hollywood's rendition of the Revolutionary War? These questions and others loom large in the wake of the Fourth of July box office returns, which saw the holiday weekend's big favorite, "The Patriot," washed away by "The Perfect Storm," the film that most observers thought would finish at No. 2. How, for example, could Mel Gibson's stars-and-stripes action flick, tailor-made for an Independence Day release, make about half as much money as a film about foolhardy fishermen who sail right into the eye of a gigantic hurricane? (In case you hadn't heard, "The Perfect Storm" reaped $62.7 million over the five-day weekend, while "The Patriot" made $35.2 mil.) How could that big market
STUDIO CITY, Calif., July 6, 2000 -- It would have been a beautiful headline: "Hollywood.com Crashes Set of 'Big Brother.'" But (sigh), it was just not meant to be. We admit -- shameless, fearless and acting kinda dumb -- we tried to storm the fortified, hush-hush "Big Brother" house on the CBS lot here in Southern California's San Fernando Valley and get the scoop on the cast in time for the show's Wednesday night premiere. And we also admit, our mission failed -- but not because we couldn’t get on the premises (as one might expect), rather, it was because we couldn’t find the stupid little house on that big lot. All things considered, getting past the security front gate was the easy part. We parked (on the streets) and walked past the security booth into the CBS Studio Lot (not to brag, but we did that twice). No questions were asked, and not so much as a glan
HOLLYWOOD, June 30, 2000 – It has been said that people eventually move past their mistakes. And for Darva Conger -- who made the mistake of (briefly) wedding the putative multi-millionaire in the one-shot Fox game show “Who Wants to Marry a Multi-millionaire?” -- posing butt-naked in Playboy looks to be one way of getting over it. Call us progressive, but when we first heard about Darva’s nudie spread in the August issue of Playboy, our reaction was not to judge the 34-year-old ex-Gulf War vet cum ex-E.R. nurse for nabbing a reported six-figure payday in a shameless publicity stunt. Rather, without bias, we decided to look at the Playboy spread as an opportunity to finally get to know the controversy-shrouded figure as she lets down her guard (and clothes). Darva Conger (c. HOLLYWOOD, June 27, 2000 -- Back in the days when KISS was a renegade rock 'n' roll band, it was rumored that their name was an acronym for Knights In Satan's Service. But after the much-publicized KISS auction last weekend at Paramount Studios here in Hollywood, we can think of better ones: "Krap Inc. Salvage Sale," or maybe "Kapitalists In Self-Service." And we're sure of at least one thing: Gene Simmons never throws away anything. Anything. Let's say you're a KISS fan, a real die-hard. OK, how much would you pay for a New Year's greeting card that Simmons once received from bandmate Paul Stanley? A card imprinted with the saying, "Is it my imagination, or is life getting better?" and bearing Paul's handwritten inscription: "Dear Gene, hope you like these. Thanks for another great year. -- Paul." Well, somebody from Baton Rouge paid $850 for it. That's 850 bucks, not $
HOLLYWOOD, June 26, 2000 -- When last we checked in with Sinéad O'Connor, the singer was announcing that she was gay. (The magazine quote we believe was: "I'm a lesbian.") But as of this past weekend, the 33-year-old O'Connor was merely "slightly confused." As are we. But in a letter to the Irish newspaper the Independent, the performer tries to clarify: "Of perhaps 30 people I've been with since 11 years of age, two have been women, the rest men," O'Connor writes. "I am rarely attracted to women but loved making love with the women I loved." O'Connor, a mother of two, says she went with the lesbian tag in a couple of interviews because she didn't want to make her two ex-girlfriends feel bad. "I believe it was overcompensating of me to declare myself a lesbian," she writes. "It was not a publicity stunt. I was trying to make someone else feel better. And
HOLLYWOOD, June 26, 2000 -- Memo to all past and future Oscar recipients: After your star has faded, after you've spent your fortune and pawned all your silverware, don’t even think about selling that gold statue on your mantle. And remind your loved ones not to try selling it after you're dead. Just ask Sid Luft, ex-manager and onetime husband (from 1952 to 1962) of the late Judy Garland, and he'll tell you how big a headache it is to get on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' hit list. Luft was in court Friday, fending off an Academy lawsuit accusing him of trying to sell Garland's Oscar on the Web. A Web site called Nate's Autographs (www.natesautographs.com) recently listed Garland's long-lost 1940 mini-Oscar statuette, which she received "for her outstanding performance as a screen juvenile" in "The Wizard of Oz," for sale. The auction, which ha

But now, nine years after his last cyborg work, does anyone give a rat's ass about "Terminator 3"? Especially if director James "Titanic" Cameron isn't behind the camera? Schwarzenegger does, for one. He made a splash Tuesday by announcing that he's signed on to reprise his role as the ass-kicking android in "T3," to be produced by C-2 Pictures (run by some of the same honchos that headed Carolco, which made "T2" in 1991) and written by Tedi Sarafian of "Tank Girl" fame. The big question is whether Cameron will entertain the notion of revisiting a franchise he created 16 years ago (with 1984's "The Terminator"). "My big wish is that Jim Cameron and I will work together again," Ah-nold writes on his official Web
HOLLYWOOD, June 21, 2000 -- In our dedicated effort to bring the world stories built upon fascinating angles, we hereby offer you an account of what goes on the day before the unveiling of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Well, all right, the truth is that this story was supposed to be about an actual unveiling ceremony, but the one scheduled for today was postponed 'til Thursday by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce due to the Los Angeles Lakers parade victory in downtown L.A. (we didn't find this out until we got down there). The chamber apparently figured that the majority of Angelenos (journalists included) would opt for the basketball rally over Jay Ward, aka the dead guy who was supposed to get the star. But we figured that since we were on Hollywood Boulevard anyway (instead of at the glitzy parade), we might as well stick around. And here's what we fo
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., June 20, 2000 -- Perhaps you've heard that Gary Coleman is running for the Senate, and you've wondered if it's true. We wondered that, too. And perhaps you've wondered, if Gary "Diff'rent Strokes" Coleman were a senator, what kind of senator would he be? We wondered that, too. Not to make you feel bad or anything, but we're better than you because we didn't settle for merely wondering. We went straight to the former child star source. On the rooftop of a tony Beverly Hills hotel, at a recent party for the entertainment Web site UGO (www.ugo.com), we cornered 32-year-old Gary Coleman. We asked, he told. Is he really running for the Senate? No and yes. He's not currently running for the Senate (the U.S. Senate, mind you), but he is considering a run. Coleman missed the filing deadlines for the 2000 general elections, b
HOLLYWOOD, June 16, 2000 -- The commencement tune that’ll inaugurate the rite of passage known as the high-school graduation this year ain’t necessarily gonna be "Pomp and Circumstance." And for that, Generation Y can thank Vitamin C and her god-awful, er, best-selling ditty, "Graduation (Friends Forever)." For those who have yet to become casualties of the teen-pop assault, Vitamin C (not to confused with the little known Oakland-based rapper of the same call name) is actually Colleen Fitzgerald -- erstwhile frontwoman for the disbanded alt rock group Eve’s Plum. Fitzgerald went solo as a singer-songwriter to churn out sunny, happy tunes (hence her name) for her self-titled debut album released late last year. The "Graduation" song in question is actually more like a rap (with lines of introspection like "where we’re gonna be/when we turn twenty-five"). Its chief distin
NEW YORK, June 16, 2000 -- The Armageddon that is "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" and Regis Philbin has reached its pinnacle. You can play along with the game in your living room. You can get the board game version. You can play it on your computer. And now, for a mere $77.50, you can dress like Regis. Yes, just in time for Father's Day, the King of Primetime has launched Regis by the Van Heusen Company line of monochrome cotton shirts and matching silk ties. (The indefatigable host was on hand at Macy's flagship store in New York Monday to promote the outfits. Right now, the Big Apple store is the only place you can find the goods.) What he doesn't remember is a clue -- any inkling, any shred of information or evidence that could have helped him stop Mary Kay Bergman from shooting herself to death at age 38 last November. Seven months after his wife's suicide, Andrade is on a mission. Bergman, he believes, suffered from an acute mental illness that she kept hidden -- even from him -- for years. Now, Andrade wants to help other actors and Hollywood types who likewise may be heading down potentially suicidal paths, and set them straight. BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., June 13, 2000 -- What the world needs now is ... a new Merv Griffin record! And that's exactly what the world's going to get, thanks to Pat Boone's unwavering dedication to preserving the art of crooning -- that mild, earnest, from-the-heart style of singing love songs. To that end, Boone held a press conference here today, where he signed Merv to a recording contract and introduced to the world the next Frank Sinatra and/or Harry Connick Jr. The event took place -- where else? -- at Merv's own Beverly Hilton Hotel, and it was emceed by yet another golden-age fossil, "Laugh-In" announcer Gary Owens. "I have challenged myself all my life. HOLLYWOOD, June 8, 2000 -- He's been a guest critic on "Roger Ebert and The Movies," he's appeared in a few Hollywood films and, by all accounts, he's the biggest (literally) and best-known entertainment reporter on the Internet. But to his compatriots in cyberspace, Harry Knowles' name isn't Harry Knowles. It's mud. A feud is brimming between the proprietor of Ain't It Cool News (www.aint-it-cool-news.com) and the Web masters of a half-dozen or so other movie-news sites, who claim that Knowles has repeatedly stolen insider movie-news scoops, taking credit as if he (or one of his many moles) had gotten it first. HOLLYWOOD, June 8, 2000 – What causes a big star to walk away from a movie, even after the contracts have been signed, and the checks have been written? Why on Earth would Mike Myers quit "Dieter," a pet project based on his "Sprockets" skit from Saturday Night Live, which was gonna bring him his first $20 million booty? Myers is hardly the first star of his magnitude to walk away from a high-profile film. That said, it's not surprising he's not the first star to get sued for desert a movie, either. See, it's become something of a sport among some Hollywood types to exit a movie set, leaving the production in a lurch, scrambling to find casting replacements. So, while Myers is busy preparing his legal defense, we thought it'd be fun and informative to look back some notable star walk-offs, and their ramifications: When Kim Basinger backed out of her role in the
HOLLYWOOD, June 6, 2000 -- The next installment of "Survivor" airs tonight on CBS. Who will survive? While we don't know, somebody out there does. The winner, after all, has already won. Given "Survivor's" core ethics of unrestrained greed, how does the network expect to prevent the show's presumably embittered dropouts from ratting out the surprise ending? Here's how: A CBS spokesman tells Hollywood.com that all "Survivor" participants signed confidentiality agreements that legally bind them from talking about the show. And secondly, all contestants must field all of their press requests through the network before interviews can be granted. With the above information in mind, our immediate reaction was to, of course, dial up the show's first booted member -- 63-year-old Sonja Christopher of Walnut Creek, Calif. -- to see how much she would tell us. But on Friday, the 34-year-old systems analyst from Princeton, N.J., was deemed a "cybersquatter" by the United Nations and ordered to surrender his Web address to the highest paid actress in Hollywood, without so much as a thank you. A case of an ungrateful star stomping on an admiring fan? Or a greedy Internet entrepreneur getting his comeuppance for trying to hold Roberts' own name hostage? Probably neither. HOLLYWOOD, June 2, 2000 -- Now we don't know how George Clooney will stack up against the hep-cat cool of Frank Sinatra, but one thing seems to be certain: That planned "Ocean's 11" remake is shaping up to be quite an affair. Or is it? If the casting reports in the Hollywood trades (and other sources) are to believed, the Steven Soderbergh-helmed remake -- based on the 1960 Rat Pack-packed caper flick about a group of 11 old war buddies bent on knocking over a bunch of Vegas casinos on New Year's Eve -- has done nothing short of locking up an A list dream cast. The much-ignored fact remains that only Clooney -- who's signed on to star as ringleader Danny Ocean (a role previously played by Sinatra) -- is committed to the project. HOLLYWOOD, May 22, 2000 -- It's only after a period of intense mourning that the process of healing can begin. And so now with the last trace of despair completely gone, we can finally start asking a question we were once unable to face: Namely, how could Jennifer Love Hewitt's first starring series, "Time of Your Life," be shoved off the air for good? HOLLYWOOD, May 19, 2000 -- As the TV nation is well aware, the past four days have marked the unveiling of the networks' new fall schedules. But what seems like nonstop programming announcements to the public is otherwise known as a week of interminable "upfronts" to advertising people. So what are they? Upfronts are industry-only events where network execs wow, sweet-talk and woo advertisers (and, they hope, their wallets) in the metropolitan centers of New York, Chicago and Los Angeles with lavish fall preview media presentations (not to mention, free food). Every TV and cable network has one, and all ad people are invited. "Basically, we come to the upfront in order to see all the new shows that are coming up in the fall season," Jamie Aruizu, ad rep from TBWA/CHIAT/DAY agency, told Hollywood.com at Thursday's West Coast presentation for UPN. "And based on what we've seen, we
HOLLYWOOD, May 18, 2000 -- Just when it seemed like all the Elian Gonzalez madness had quieted down a bit, here comes Hollywood. It was inevitable that the saga of the Cuban kid, who was fished out of U.S. waters and soon became the focus of international debate, would have his life story made into a film. And today, the Fox Family Channel became the first to announce such plans. "The Elian Gonzalez Story," a two-hour movie, will air in September. Less you think this docudrama exploitive, Fox Family Channel President Rich Cronin said in a statement that the movie will provide "a launching pad for family discussions ... to assist parents in helping their children understand this complicated issue." See? Isn't that nice?
HOLLYWOOD, May 17, 2000 - All right, here's the scoop: Mutants walk among us. But not to worry, a hard-line, true-blue U.S. senator is working to save America from these genetically impure subhumans. Heck, he's even come up with ways to help you identify mutants in your midst, and if you suspect your milkman or co-worker, you can report them to the proper authorities. Say what? Oh, yeah, we forgot to mention it's all a (very clever) satirical campaign to promote Fox's upcoming "X-Men" movie, which opens July 14 and stars Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and Halle Berry. The Mutant Watch Initiative (www.mutantwatch.com) sprang up on the Web last week. Corresponding TV commercials in which Sen. Kelly (as played by Bruce Davison) spews bellicose campaign rhetoric against mutants and asks voters to support his vision of a "genetically cleaner" America also began appearing.
HOLLYWOOD, May 16, 2000 -- Britney Spears' new album is in stores today. Will "Oops! ... I Did It Again" live up to the sales of last year's No. 1 "Baby One More Time"? Will some new budding teen singer steal her audience? Or will her audience simply move on on its own? Tony DeFranco knows the pressure facing the "Oops" girl. Maybe he never made the kind of megamoney that 18-year-old Spears is swimming in, but the lead singer of the polyester-era DeFranco Family ("Heartbeat, It's a Lovebeat") was every bit as much the "It" popster for 1973 as Spears was the "It" popster for 1999. DeFranco Family DeFranco survived the inevitable loss of fame that usually comes with the post-puberty years. And while the fan mail stopped coming, DeFranco went on to succeed as a record producer and businessman. So, when the 40-something singer offers a bit of unsolicited advice
HOLLYWOOD, May 16, 2000 - Demi Moore knows a bad film when she sees one - apparently such is the gift of someone who's arguably been in many of them. But who'd have thought that the actress would go as far as skipping out on her own upcoming flick? An upcoming flick that marks Moore's first screen appearance in three long years? Doesn't she need publicity for being something these days other than the estranged Mrs. Bruce Willis. Guess not. On May 26, Paramount Classics is scheduled to quietly open the parallel-lives drama "Passion of Mind", starring Matthew Beisner, Demi Moore and Demi Moore. (She plays not one, but two, parts in the flick.) Word is that, for yet identified reasons, the finished film somehow managed to offend Moore's sensibilities so much so that she flat out refused to do any kind of promotion or publicity for the film. No perfunctory media junkets, no
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., May 11, 2000 -- Touchy, touchy, touchy. All Roger Christian wanted to do was talk about his new movie. All the reporters wanted to do was ask him about the film's rumored ties to Scientology, the religion of choice for star and co-producer John Travolta. Not surprisingly, the long-haired English director seemed slightly annoyed, if not flustered, on Wednesday when journalists at a media junket in Beverly Hills, Calif., at the Four Seasons Hotel pressed him for answers about alleged subliminal messages in "Battlefield Earth," which opens Friday. Christian, in fact, ended at least one round-table session accusing the media types of wasting his interview time with Scientology stuff -- even though, once he got started on the subject, he rarely talked about anything else himself. HOLLYWOOD, May 12, 2000 - Hayden Christensen, who? For most, the 19-year-old Canadian was an unknown until he became the (still-unconfirmed) lock to play Anakin Skywalker in "Star Wars: Episode II." But to a handful, the actor was not only already a household name, but virtually a part of their lives. Welcome to the Hayden Christensen fan culture, which -- much like the fandom of other idiosyncratic interests -- consists of a ring of do-it-yourself Web sites dedicated to the actor's honor. This week, we discovered at least six Christensen fan sites (see below), some run by teenyboppers "girls" ranging in age from 14 to 20. So, who are the pre-"Star Wars" Hayden Christen fans? And why are they Hayden Christensen fans? We wanted to know. We found out. "I first saw [Hayden] in 'Trapped in a Purple Haze' [a 2000 TV-movie]. I think that he is an amazing actor," says S

John C. Reilly SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 8, 2000 -- Every year, people in New York throw a big awards party for themselves called the Tonys. And every year, the national media pays attention because, gee, if it happens in New York, it must be important and, well, peer pressure is a powerful thing. That said, we hereby note that the nominations for the Tony Awards, honoring the finest in cornball Broadway musicals and such, were announced today. A revival of a show you probably have never seen -- Cole Porter's "Kiss Me Kate" -- led the way with 12 nominations. Nominees you may have heard of include: Elton John (up for Best Score for "Aida") and film types Philip Seymour Hoffman and John C. Reilly (lead acting contenders for the play "True West"). If you must, the awards will be presented June 4. Rosie O'Donnell is set to host the CBS telecast. For complete
HOLLYWOOD, May 5, 2000 -- If your vision of Hollywood is that of actors strutting up and down the Walk of Fame, that was at least the case here this week. Boasting picket signs, rhyming slogans and matching steps, about 100 actors from the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) gathered on McCadden Place in the heart of Hollywood on Wednesday. Their mission: to thwart a Nike commercial shoot that was slated to roll at 4:00 p.m. that afternoon. And we were there. Because (a) Tiger Woods wasn't (he pulled out of the gig in support of the union actors); and, (b) we wanted to know what the deal was in Hollywood's first major walkout since 1988. Though the protesters might not have been famous, known or even remotely recognizable, their collective effort was still greeted with shows of support from onlookers and passer
SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 4, 2000 -- So, did you hear that hot rumor about Christina Aguilera? Or did you just listen to the new Eminem cut? Yes, leave it to Eminem, alter-ego Slim Shady, to give social commentary a bad name. The hip-hop phenomenon, whose irreverent 1999 debut album "Slip Shady LP" won over suburban kids and industry moguls alike, is courting trouble again with the unapologetically scathing lyrics on his forthcoming album "The Marshall Mathers LP," due out May 23. The track in contention, titled "The Real Slim Shady," is also the first single to come out of the sophomore album. And keeping very much to his lyrical forte, the song is an all-out banter binge, a catalogue of tailor-made dis served up to some of today's high-profile entertainment types. Among the folks getting the rough side of Eminem's tongue this song around include the Tommy Lees
SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 3, 2000 - Call it substitute gratification if you want. Gary Coleman, the erstwhile, vertically-challenged "Diff'rent Strokes" star, has come out of years of post-career oblivion to announce his bid for a California Senate seat, it has been confirmed. "It's true that he's planning to run and he's taped his announcement in an appearance that was set up for him on Fox News," Coleman's publicist Michael Casey told Hollywood.com Tuesday. "He is formulating his plans now. UnderGround Online [www.ugo.com] is backing him financially." Coleman made his political aspirations public on the Fox News Channel over the weekend. While the former actor has yet to decide on his party affiliation, he told the news program that, "I'm such a radical with certain ideas and fundamental beliefs that I might have to run independent." Er, actually Coleman has to
SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 2, 2000 - Admit it. You've heard it while station surfing the dead radio airwaves, you've watched the video in its entirety (voluntarily or not) on MTV. And yes, you've even caught yourself unintentionally singing the insistently catchy chorus, "Do-di-do-do...Oops, I did it again, Di-da-di-di, I played with your heart..." We admit it. Like million of teenyboppers, we also have been listening to (and, watching) Britney Spears' new ditty, "Oops! I Did It Again," religiously since the debut of her video on MTV's "TRL" (that's "Total Request Live") at No. 1 on April 12.Everyday we tune in to try make sense of the plot line (not to mention the "Titanic" reference), and everyday we end up marveling at the blood-red, skintight bodysuit in which the popstress does most of her regimented dance moves. So imagine our genuine concern when the 18-year-old si
SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 2, 2000 -- A "Charlie's Angels" movie? Probably sounded like a pretty damn good idea. But as incessant set reports have made clear, the flick has been anything but a pretty good damn thing. (See below.) The latest "Angels" foible comes in the form of the reputed resignation by Bill Murray, who, wags have it, stomped off the project April 17 after an argument between him and co-star Lucy Liu -- an argument in which the feisty "Ally McBeal" chick supposedly threw air punches at the beloved comic. While the folks at Sony Pictures, the studio behind the flick, remained mum when we called for comments, the fact is that the Murray-Liu feud is merely the most recent footnote to a project long plagued by mishaps, gossips, rumored implosions and bad publicity. Here's a recap of all nail-breaking, ego-clashing fun: CASTING Though D
"Friends" (© NBC) SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 27, 2000 -- From the closing days of April to the better part of May, tears will be calculatedly shed, market-researched miracles attempted and the monumental exit of "Beverly Hills, 90210," hitherto known as the show that started it all, finally realized. Nay, it's not a shift of cosmos in the universe of perpetually bad TV programming. Rather, the said tube highlights are merely part of that scheme known as the May sweeps, wherein -- from today until May 24 -- networks' best and brightest shows come out to compete for the almighty ratings points upon which ad rates for the upcoming season are based. Besides the usual hubbubs of TV specials on the bill this May, we thought we'd mention the TV resurrection of personalities such as Bruce Willis and Jesus Christ -- who, if not for the sweeps, would probably never be mentioned in
"Friends" (© NBC) SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 26, 2000 -- Maintaining the lifestyle of the rich and famous ain't cheap. And who'd know that better than those perky artistes known as the stars of "Friends" -- who, as the TV nation is well-aware of, are collectively demanding a lofty pay raise as their contracts and the show's sixth-season run down. As their current monetary compensation goes, each member of the "Friends" sextet pulls in a respectable $125,000 per episode this year, the final stage of a gradual pay hike (from a $40,000 starting point) that was negotiated out of a similar collective bargaining stalemate in 1996. And despite that's $125,000 an episode, the "Friends" coup is said to be asking for a lot more moolah this time around: as much as $800,000 per episode, per actor -- plus retroactive back pay for this year's 24 shows, according to one report i
SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 21, 2000 -- "Rules of Engagement" is in deep doo-doo with the Republic of Yemen. The Associated Press reported Thursday that the Yemenese government is displeased with the Samuel Jackson/Tommy Lee Jones' actioner's inflammatory depiction of its citizenry, calling it a "barbaric and racist attack against Arabs and Yemenis." Yemen is urging its neighbors in the Arab world to boycott the flick and its distributor, Paramount Pictures. (Geography lesson: Formed in 1900 by the unification of North and South Yemen, the Republic of Yemen is located in Southwest Asia, on the South Arabian peninsula. The republic borders Saudi Arabia, Oman, the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea.) The court-room drama, opened in the United States on April 7, focuses on a military trial wherein a Marine official (Samuel L. Jackson) stationed in Yemen is charged with mass murde
SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 19, 2000 -- What does an A-list surname like Coppola get you in Hollywood? Memo to Sofia Coppola, whose directorial debut, "The Virgin Suicides," opens today: It won't necessarily get you famous. While nepotism is alive and well in the acting trade, your dad's coattails won't give you much of a free ride in the cutthroat world of directing. Case in point: There are lots of famous actors who have passed their occupational torch to their equally famous offspring (Blythe Danner to Gwyneth Paltrow, Jon Voight to Angelina Jolie, the Fonda clan), but few big-name directors have given rise to big-name directors. Instead, great filmmakers tend to spawn auteur-minded kids, whose work never quite measures up to dad's (Witness Nick Cassavetes, Jennifer Lynch and Anjelica Huston). These second-generation directors tend to have two things in common
SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 18, 2000 -- News flash: Tinky Winky accused of promoting firearms! As the Teletubbies surely know by now, it's much easier to pacify thumb-sucking kiddies than uptight grown-ups. Last year, media holy-roller Jerry Falwell "outed" Tinky Winky, accusing the purple, triangle-flagging, purse-carrying creature of being a flagrant homosexual. Now another mind-boggling Tinky Winky controversy is brewing on the horizon. And this time -- believe it or not -- Tinky Winky is linked to gun violence. In case you're clueless here, the Teletubbies is a children's TV show imported from the U.K. that pacifies pre-cognitive toddlers with nonsensical gibberish. Since its inception in 1997, the show has been periodically attacked -- sometimes because of the Tubbies' indecipherable, mush-mouth jargon (the red character, Po, was once accused of saying "fagg
SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 17, 2000 -- A few years back, Jet Li’s ass-kicking dexterity was known only to a select few -- namely, geeky Far East cinephiles immersed in a world of fanzines and fringe video stores. And in two major U.S. flicks' time, the Chinese martial artist turned movie star has joined the ranks of other imported Hong Kong cinematic icons -- such as Jackie Chan and Chow Yun-Fat -- in successfully making the crossover from the niche market of Asian cinema to the cash cow of Hollywood. And the bucks (plus the roles) don’t stop there. Daily Variety reported today that the actor has just signed with Warner Bros. to co-produce and star in another action flick titled "The First King." Based on Li’s own idea, the film is said to be an action-adventure that’s inspired by the first monarch of China who comes back to life in modern times. And word has it that Li’s also
SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 10, 2000 -- Tonight, all eyes were on the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium to witness the presence -- or absence -- of Whitney Houston at the Arista Records' benefit concert. To cut to the chase: Yes, she showed. (Did a six-song, 20-minute set, even.) Houston -- who bowed out on the Oscars and skipped a couple of Grammy rehearsals -- was indeed among the performers at the bash, which doubled as a 25th anniversary celebration of the Arista label. In keeping with her M.O. at being, well, different, Houston bade her audience farewell with the curious: "The record's not over yet, remember." The appearance was her first since the blown Oscar gig (also to be at the Shrine) and came on the heels of an article in the new People magazine in which the singer's alleged substance abuse problem was hinted at publicly. The above assessment is neither based on the singing legend's career milestones, overall influence or sartorial outrageousness. SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 7, 2000 - They haven't come close to cracking the Billboard Top 100, but the Beta Band are suddenly enjoying the perks of membership in a much cooler list: Top Five Bands. According to John Cusack, anyway. If you haven't heard of the Beta Band, you're not alone - either that, or you just haven't seen "High Fidelity," in which Cusack plays the owner of a super-hip, indie-minded Chicago record store. In a scene that's as close to free advertising as you can get, Cusack turns to one of his employees and says, "I am now going to sell five copies of 'The 3 Ep's' by The Beta Band." As he plays the cut "Dry the Rain" on the store's in-house stereo system, customers start bobbing their heads in approval, and then make their way to the counter to buy the CD. The Beta Band So, a couple of questions: (1) Who the hell's the Beta Band; and, (2) What did they

HORRORWOOD, Karloffornia, April 5, 2000 -- It's shaping up as one of the greatest battles in the history of monster movies, right up there with "Frankenstein vs. the Wolf Man," "King Kong vs. Godzilla" and even the yet-unfilmed "Freddy vs. Jason." Coming soon to a courtroom near you (via Court TV, natch): "Forry vs. Ferry," with cameos by Stephen King, Ray Bradbury, Hugh Hefner and others. The "Forry" in question is Forrest J. "Ferry" is one Ray Ferry, the magazine's current publisher, and the target of a $1 million lawsuit in which Ackerman seeks to regain control of his creature-feature legacy. SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 6, 2000 - The over-scrutinized sexuality of Academy Award-winning star Kevin Spacey has been over-scrutinized. Again. In the April 11 issue of the Star, the tabloid-par-excellence goes full tilt with a centerfold report featuring one salacious headline ("Revealed! Oscar winner Kevin's mountaintop tryst with young male model") 12 pics, and several groaner captions (including "Male Bonding," "Gay Old Time," "Out and About" and - yeesh - "Going Down"). The report all but says the sexual preference of the actor is really of the same-sex variety, despite what he insistently professes -- i.e., that he's strictly hetero. So, has tabloid journalism sunk to an unprecedented low? "Well, I actually think it's a slightly more problematic issue," says Jeannette Walls, MSNBC gossip columnist and author of the just-published "Dish: The Inside Story on the Wo
SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 4, 2000 -- Today's the day. The one you indubitably marked on your calendar months ago: April 4, aka the release of "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace" on video (and video only). Unless, of course, you got the tape a couple of days ago. You see, as is usual, unbridled "Phantom Menace" frenzy has taken the form of advance demands. But besides the publicly known convenience of preordering a copy, there were other -- some clandestine, some not -- ways of obtaining early-bird videos. And we're not even talking about bootlegs (which, technically, have been available on a fine New York City street corner near you since, well, May). From virtual stores to old-school plaster-and-wood stores, the official "Phantom Menace" video has been all over the place in recent days. Consider the virtual junkyard that is ebay (www.ebay.com), where

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 30, 2000 -- "Star Trek" fans have a Bones to pick with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. On Sunday's Oscar telecast, actor DeForest Kelley, aka Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy of the Starship Enterprise crew, was excluded from the annual montage of Actors Who Died Since The Last Oscars -- even though the man had impeccable credentials, having died himself June 11 at age 79. As Bones himself might say: "He's dead, Jim!" Trekkers, understandably, are not taking the snub lightly. Soon after the Oscars, the alt.startrek Internet newsgroup was buzzing. Asked one post: "Did anyone else notice that the Academy totally snubbed DeForest Kelley and John Colicos [the evil Count Baltar from the "Battlestar Galactica" TV series, who died March 6] during the memoriam section tonight? What the hell?" Turns out that lots of other peop
SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 31, 2000 -- Starting today, the path of two distinct social groups -- "Dawson's Creek" devotees and Yale undergrads -- may cross ever so briefly in the theaters, poring over every detail of "The Skulls." But while hypnotized "Dawson's" converts are expected to drool over the film's baby-faced star Joshua Jackson, Yalies will more likely be pondering the similarity between the school's fabled secret society (Skull and Bones) and the film's ersatz one (The Skulls). In the movie version, the aforementioned Joshua Jackson plays a blue-collar townie attending an unidentified Ivy League school. Hijinks (well, mystery) ensues when he's recruited to join the school's prestigious secret society, eponymously named, "The Skulls." And though the filmmakers are illusive about the source of their inspiration, many -- including the Yalies themselves -- have

Joshua Jackson By doing exactly that: Just about anything. So when a story broke a couple of weeks ago that "Dawson's Creek" wonder boy Joshua Jackson had willed himself onto the Anakin candidate list by personally spreading rumors about his possible casting, well, it all made sense. Except Jackson never did such a thing. The urban legend began as most urban legends do -- with an itty, bitty bit of truth. SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 16, 2000 -- When it comes to movie rumors, Harry Knowles is the doyen of the Internet. The name of his Web site says it all: Ain't It Cool? Every day on www.aint-it-cool-news.com, Knowles and his army of anonymous Hollywood tipsters blow the lid off top-secret production details and review films before mainstream Hollywood critics ever see them. Most of the time, the rumors and "spoilers" are accurate. But not always. Case in point: On Monday, Knowles posted what looked like the list of Oscar nominations -- a day before the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences made its official announcement. It was a scoop, and Knowles clucked that he'd "scored a major treat" for his readers. But Tuesday morning, Knowles was wiping egg off his face when Academy President Robert Rehme pronounced the Ain't It Cool list as "bogus." Suddenly, the do
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 15, 2000 -- Thanks to FedEx, the mind-altering, substance-induced subtext bubbling beneath Dorothy's journey back to Kansas has finally hit mainstream America. Unfortunately, mainstream America isn't digging that revelation one bit. Ad-industry tracker Advertising Age reported Monday that the global delivery behemoth has voluntarily retracted its popular "Wizard of Oz"-inspired ad from tube rotation. Why? The public's (that is, the buying public's) outcry over the ad's ... um, shall we say, questionable use of helium balloons. So what's all the fuzz about? Seems the computer-manipulated spot, which debuted during last month's Super Bowl, features a scene from the 1939 family classic wherein a trio of baritone-voiced Munchkins suck from three helium-inflated balloons to restore their Munchkin-style voices. (For those who managed to miss t
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 11, 2000 -- Seen any good Satanic-possession movies lately? The granddaddy of all devil-in-me flicks, "The Exorcist," is set to return to a handful of U.S. theaters next month in an all-new expanded and restored version that contains "more than one full reel of long-rumored, legendary footage, excised before the film's original release," according to Warner Bros. The new version isn't being billed as a "director's cut," but rather as an "author's cut." Director William Friedkin, who supervised the restoration, says this is the version that author William Peter Blatty (who wrote the screenplay, based on his novel) wanted to see back in 1973. Twenty-six years ago, Friedkin and the studio had other ideas. Now Friedkin's a convert. "After viewing it a quarter of a century later I've come to agree with him," Friedkin says in a
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 11, 2000 -- It's not easy being the most famous man in the world. Nasty rumors about you are circulated on the Internet. The press watches your every move. Make one stinkin' movie in a third-world country and all of a sudden you're an environmental terrorist. It's enough to drive a guy to punch a photographer, Frank Sinatra-style. Or, in the case of Leonardo DiCaprio, it's enough to drive a guy to hire his own media. (Heck, at $20 mil per movie, he can afford it).And when "The Beach" premiered at Mann's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood last week, that's pretty much what happened.Leonardo DiCaprio, you see, isn't just the most-tracked star on the movie universe -- he's the most "innovative." (Hey, even his own camp says so.)To be sure, the guy does know a thing or two about the power of, well, power. Word around the campfire was that
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 8, 2000 -- Doug Henning, the perpetually upbeat, curly haired, mustachioed magician who made illusion a multimedia affair (on the road, on stage, on television) in the 1970s and 1980s, died Monday in Los Angeles. He was 52. Henning had suffered from liver cancer for five months. Henning revived the popularity of magic through the rock musical "The Magic Show" in the 1970s, which ran on Broadway for more than four years. He returned to the stage for "Merlin" and "Doug Henning's World of Magic" in the 1980s. Henning is survived by his wife, Debbie. The hip-hop world, meanwhile, is mourning the loss of Big Punisher (a.k.a. Christopher Rios) who died Monday in New York at age 28. The 698-pound Puerto Rican-born rapper, whose double-platinum album "Capital Punishment" spawned the hit single "Still Not a Player" in 1998, was thought to have
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 2, 2000 -- Never underestimate Julia Roberts' clout. Daily Variety reports that the actress is showing interest in the action-comedy "The Mexican" and is considering taking the female lead. The pretty woman's possible involvement in the $10 million dollar project is indelibly breathing renewed life into the formerly lackluster project, which saw the joint departure of "Fight Club" helmer David Fincher and megastar Brad Pitt early in its pre-production phrase. The effect of Robert's decision goes far beyond than just one star billing for the flick. Variety reports that many Hollywood insiders predict that Roberts' move might very well reignite Pitt's interest in recommitting to the male lead. The flick is about a seasoned criminal who hunts down a legendary cursed pistol in Mexico while being pressured to change his evil ways by his girl
His dudeness Keanu Reeves is slated to star in Columbia's "The Ottoman Empire," a political parody penned and directed by Andrew Bergman ("Isn't She Great").The flick tells the story of an erstwhile porn star (played by Reeves) who's blackmailed into providing certain vocation service to the first lady of the United States. No word yet on when the film will go in front of the camera. Trade papers reported that the project will probably begin shooting some time between the Reeves vehicles "Sweet November" rolling this spring and back-to-back "The Matrix" sequels set to go into production this fall. "GIFT" LOOKING SWANK: Hilary Swank, who was just named ShoWest 2000's female star of tomorrow, is set to begin work on "The Gift," the Sam Raimi film which principal cast includes Keanu Reeves and Cate Blanchett and Giovanni Ribisi, and Greg Kinnear.Swank will pl
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 17, 2000 -- Ice Cube's hip-hop comedy "Next Friday" packed the winning punch at the holiday weekend box office, surprising Hollywood insiders who thought Denzel Washington's "The Hurricane" would claim the prize for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. "Stuart Little," meanwhile, thought big again -- placing second and cracking the $100 million mark overall. The R-rated "Next Friday," New Line's sequel to the 1995 flick "Friday," maintained the high energy it displayed when it opened Wednesday. It easily captured first place with a sizzling estimated $17 million at 1,103 theaters ($15,413 per theater) from Friday to Monday. Its cumulative take after six days is approximately $21.5 million, with about $4.5 million of that having come in Wednesday and Thursday. Directed by Steve Carr, "Next Friday" was written and produced by and stars rapper/act
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 14, 2000 -- It's always a bad omen when Alan Smithee directs a movie. But what about one directed by Thomas Lee? As every student of show-biz minutiae knows, "Smithee" is the pseudonym Hollywood typically uses when a filmmaker wants his or her real name removed from the final credits. "Thomas Lee," on the other hand, is a newcomer. Lee makes his first appearance as an Alan Smithee type on MGM's "Supernova," a $70 million sci-fi disaster flick starring James Spader and Angela Bassett as outer-space medical rescue workers. In reality, Lee is veteran filmmaker Walter Hill ("48 Hours"). Hill, whose last film under his own name was 1996's "Last Man Standing," was booted from the project in February 1999. Today, Lee's/Hill's orphaned film hits theaters - and the question is: Is "Supernova" about to implode? "Generally
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 9, 2000 - Nobody saw "Nobody." Almost. With an unwhopping $488 take (less than the price of a big-screen TV), the Phaedra Cinema release was 1999's lowest-grossing feature on record through Dec. 30, industry statistics show. The film, a Japanese import, represents the flip side of Hollywood's chest-thumping and box-office boasting. For each blockbuster that pulled in $100 million-plus last year (there were 18 in all), there were at least 20 that grossed less than $2,000. Directed by first-timer Toshimichi Ohkawa, "Nobody" was an action thriller about three friends whose lives changed when a bar fight became something far, far beyond their control. In a review for @NZone Magazine, writer Dustin Putman awarded the film a passing two-and-a-half (out of five) stars, calling it a "tautly filmed and tightly developed" flick that ultimately f
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Dec. 30, 1999 -- Another Beatle victimized by violence.Ex-Mop Top George Harrison was stabbed at his London-area home today by a knife-wielding intruder, reports say.Harrison, 56, was stabbed once in the chest before fending off the attacker. His wife, Olivia, suffered minor head injuries in the attack, but did not require hospitalization. The rock-'n'-roll legend, meanwhile, was transported to Royal Berkshire Hospital where he was listed in stable condition. The attack, which reportedly took place sometime around 3:30 a.m. London time, was said to have shocked residents of the quiet, upper-class community of Henley-On-Thames. Harrison's estate was thought to be particularly well guarded. It reportedly featured 24-hour security, patrol dogs and barbed wire fencing. British authorities said they were investigating burglary as a possible motive.
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Dec. 29, 1999 -- With so many good composers and musicians around, it's hard to imagine the special, demented skills that produce bad soundtracks.Still, they do happen. As a public service, we've managed to identify the 1999 releases that don't seem to have much artistic integrity, much less redeeming value for discriminating ears. Our underachievers are:7. "More Music from Austin Powers" – OK, so maybe some of the stuff on this second soundtrack from the highly successful Mike Myers comedy is actually listenable. But we reject the need to create an entire CD just to present a dance mix of Madonna's "Beautiful Stranger."6. "Swing" – This soundtrack proves that Lisa Stansfield does not sing jazz well. While we're sure she's a very nice person, we suggest that Stansfield stick to her own style and leave the swing for those who can.5. "A
It looks like tough sledding for Hollywood this pre-Christmas weekend, according to distribution executives with an eye on tracking study data.None of the three new wide releases appears likely to open impressively."It doesn't look too exciting in terms of the openings," said one studioexecutive. "The first choice on 'Bicentennial Man' is running only like 8%. Now, admittedly, it's (only mid-week) but I would think they would like to have been in double digits by now."Buena Vista/Touchstone and Columbia Pictures' PG-rated sci-fi fantasy "Bicentennial Man," directed by Chris Columbus and starring Robin Williams, opens Friday at about 2,200 theaters. While 2,200 theaters is certainly a wide break, it's not as wide as last weekend's theater count for "Toy Story 2" (3,257), "The Green Mile" (2,875), "The World Is Not Enough" (3,063), "End Of Days" (2,652) or "Sleepy Ho
WEST HOLLYWOOD -- On the surface, "The End of the Affair" is a love story, infusing elements of obsession and jealousy. But against the background of World War II during London's Blitz, love gets taken to the ultimate extreme, and destiny's hand takes hold. It was this precise spin that drew director Neil Jordan to first adapt, then direct the film. The director of films such as "The Crying Game" (for which he won a screenplay Oscar) and "Interview With a Vampire" read Graham Greene's novel back in high school but began to think of it as a movie when he reacquainted himself with the text five years ago. "It was fascinating stuff," the 49-year-old director says, relaxing in a whiskey bar at the Sunset Marquis Hotel & Villa. "The combination of sexuality and mysticism. It's a detective story ... and the central relationship is seen from the man's point of view, and then fro
HOLLYWOOD, June 9, 2000 -- Nevermind Angelina Jolie. The biggest scene-stealer in "Gone in 60 Seconds" may well be Eleanor, the revving classic Mustang that Nicolas Cage is so bent to get his hands on in the car-chase flick. But despite its cool look and tough muscles, the 1967 Shelby Mustang GT 500 is still no match to its same-named predecessor, the 1973 Mach 1 Mustang in the original "Gone in 60 Seconds" -- the 1974 B-type flick that's more familiar to drive-ins than mutliplexes. Written, directed and produced on a shoe-string budget by H.B. ("Toby") Halicki (who also played the lead), the original flick was a true do-it-yourself effort in that the whole production -- a production featuring 93 cars (and 100 wrecks) -- was solely financed by the writer-director-producer. The chases and clashes -- which prominently figured in the plot about a car burglar alternately running fro
HOLLYWOOD, May 24, 2000 – If you're planning on seeing "Mission: Impossible 2" today, you can forget it. There's no such movie. Say what? After all, aren't there billboards all over North America officially proclaiming today -- May 24 -- as opening day for the new Tom Cruise movie? Right, but those billboards are for "M:I-2," or as it's more properly identified, The Movie Formerly Known As "Mission: Impossible 2." Confused? Well, we were too. So, we called the folks at Paramount, who started the confusion by telling everyone that the flick's title is "M:I-2." That's the way it's listed in all the studio's promotional materials, that's what's it's called in all the trailers, and on all the posters. In other words, says Paramount, "M:I-2" supposedly isn't an acronym for "Mission: Impossible 2," but just a catchy title in its own right. So, what led Paramoun

SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 28, 2000 -- So, Steven Spielberg has finally given the OK to release his neo-classic Universal movies on DVD. That's nice, but it's no big deal, right? Wrong. Because even though DVD's emergence as the dominant home entertainment format is undeniable, there are a lot of filmmakers, movie studio types and other influential people out there who continue to deny it, leaving lots of classic movies that have been available on plain ol' VHS tape for years unreleased in the new format. In fact, a DVD collector's most-wanted-disc list would include these hall of fame movies: "Citizen Kane" (1941), "King Kong" (the 1933 original), the "Godfather" trilogy, "Lawrence of Arabia" (1962), "The Apartment" (1960), "The African Queen" (1951), "Bringing Up Baby" (1938), "Superman" (1978) and its sequels, "Back to the Future" and "The French Connection"
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., June 23, 2000 -- It could be the best movie we see all summer -- even if the movie in question is 25 years old, and even if the movie did give us a (real) pain in the neck. Cinephile culture was alive and well at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Beverly Hills on Thursday night for a silver anniversary screening of Robert Altman’s country-fied masterpiece "Nashville." (The event kicked off a five-week, 18-film retrospective of the director sponsored by the American Film Institute.) For one night, it was 1975 again, with the cast and crew of the film -- including screenwriter Joan Tewkesbury, actors Ned Beatty, Karen Black, Jeff Goldblum and Altman himself -- reuniting to celebrate (and hash over) the making of the two-and-a-half-hour epic. Fanatical behaviors abounded: People lined up outside the Academy building more than an hour
HOLLYWOOD, June 9, 2000 – OK, let's get the cliché out of the way: "Who's the Black private dick that's a sex machine to all the chicks?" If you answered "Shaft," well, you're only half right. Because in the new "Shaft" (opening next Friday), Samuel L. Jackson doesn't get any booty. Sure, there's some lovemaking going on during the opening credits, and there's one scene where Jackson (as the titular Black private dick) picks up a female bartender by asking if she wants him to hold her, or to give her the "L.D." (and we're guessing that's not code for cheap long-distance rates). But when you recall that the original Shaft, Richard Roundtree, went to bed with at least two women in his three "Shaft" movies (and yes, you saw him in the sack with the chicks) -- including sexy Vonetta McGee and the woman who propositioned him by asking, "How long is your phallus?" -- J
SANTA MONICA, Calif., February 4, 2000 -- Four years ago, "Scream" made slasher movies cool again, made big-screen stars out of Neve Campbell and a few other TV teens and made lots and lots of money.Today brings "Scream 3," the final entry in the series. The release is a real head-scratcher for some. On one hand, Miramax is pushing it in a record 3,467 theaters; on the other hand, it's pushing it into said theaters with a minimum of (how can this be?) hype."In my two years of dishing out gossip and news for my Internet Web site, I have never seen such a low-profile for one of the most popular franchises," says Thomas Chau, webmaster of Cinema Confidential (www.cinecon.com), a movie rumor-tracking Web site, tells Hollywood.com.In the movies, secrecy means either one of two things: (1) Your movie stinks and you don't want anybody to know (until they buy ti
HOLLYWOOD, June 30, 2000 -- If only there was a new "Star Wars" movie every summer, then maybe Hollywood might have something to celebrate. Instead, box office grosses are lagging about 6 percent behind last year's figures, which were buoyed by the gargantuan success of "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace" and its $431.1 million-grossing theatrical run. Through Sunday, domestic summer movie ticket sales amounted to $774 million; during the same period in 1999, that figure was $820 million. (The summer movie season, by the way, runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day, according to movie industry watchers.) The studios are banking on this holiday weekend, with two so-called "event movies" ("The Patriot" and "The Perfect Storm") going head to head, to resuscitate the summer cash flow. But Brandon Gray, editor of Boxofficemojo.com, says it might not be eno
HOLLYWOOD, June 21, 2000 - Ever seen Final Destination or Frequency? If you haven't, chances are someone within your rock-throwing range has. See, people -- a lot of them, we might add -- have been buying tickets to these films week after week after week, making them the year's modest, if not surprise, hits. Which bring us to this perplexing question: In a box-office world dominated by "M-I:2" blockbusters, how do you account for throwaway flicks (see opening paragraph) that somehow manage to hang around long enough to rake in the dough, while higher-profile flicks like Jackie Chan's "Shanghai Noon" fizzle (relatively speaking) despite high expectations. Just to get an idea of what we mean, consider this: It was just last weekend that the two-month-old "Frequency," which bowed in the No. 3 spot on its opening weekend (not a super- strong showing), finally fell out of the
HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 4, 2001 -- It's a long way til Super Bowl Sunday, but CBS execs -- God bless them -- are finally giving tube watchers a little something to fight their collective withdrawal. And no, we ain't talking about football. For to our TV nation, there exists a certain phenomenon much more inexplicably addictive than sports, and it is called "Survivor: The Australian Outback." Yes. After much media hype and requisite hush-hush, the Eye Network has unveiled this morning the 16 contestants on the sequel to its uber-bankable reality series, which debuts after the Super Bowl on Jan. 28. The breakdown is as follows: Eight men and eight women (three of them married) ranging from a young pup at age 22 to a more seniorly age 53. In terms of their occupations, there is an administrative assistant, two bartenders, a chef, a singer-songwriter, a Harvard law st
HOLLYWOOD, June 5, 2000 -- MTV kick-starts another spanking new season of "The Real World" on Tuesday.
