SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 1, 2000 -- Remember "Gorilla World," the would-be UPN series conceived by "Spawn" architect Todd McFarlane? The one that sounded suspiciously like a certain film predecessor called "Planets of the Apes"?Well, apparently the folks at 20th Century Fox (the studio that owns the right to the "Apes" franchise) also noticed the marked similarity between the two projects. And they are not buying any of that homage crap.Today's Daily Variety says UPN has scrapped the project after Fox's legal wing fired off a letter. For its part, UPN insists that the series' cancellation had nothing whatsoever to do with Fox's legal meddling.McFarlane, on the other hand, is not as silent in the matter. In a "they-should-talk" rebuttal to the trade paper, McFarlane cited Fox's television division's "Millionaire" rip-off "Greed" as an example of rampant plagiari
Another body blow for "Rocky."According to reports today, the hit-challenged Sylvester Stallone, who last year complained he was, yo, "a man without a country," is now minus a big-time deal with Universal Pictures that reportedly guaranteed him $20 mil per flick. No word on when exactly the pact was terminated, or who did the terminating. (Stallone's camp issued a "no comment" on the Daily Variety report.) We only know this: Stallone hasn't had a certified hit since "Cliffhanger" and "Demolition Man," both released in 1993. We also know this: The landmark $60 million, three-picture deal, between Universal and the middle-aged action star in August 1995, produced just one movie, the as-yet-unreleased thriller "D-Tox." But all is not lost for our fiftysomething fellow. Lately, Stallone has been keeping busy with a remake of "Get Carter," the 1971 action film
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 21, 2000 -- Wanna hear something scary? The shoot date for the "Blair Witch Project" sequel has been pushed back. "The Blair Witch Project" All right, maybe the real scary news is that Artisan Entertainment is still forging ahead with a follow-up to last year's dog-and-pony show known as the "Blair Witch" box-office behemoth. In any case, the deal is shooting was supposed to start this week — on Wednesday, to be precise (at least according to the casting breakdown sheet leaked to the media last month). Artisan mucky-mucks say the dates mentioned in the said memo were "contingent on casting" (and the availability of rocks and twigs, no doubt). The bottom line: Production won't get under way for at least another three weeks. Have no fear, though -- no one's even talking about pushing back the release date for "Blair Witch 2." As always,
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 18, 2000 -- Leave it to Hollywood to try to fool audiences into thinking that Walter Matthau and any woman could produce offspring in the form of Diane Keaton, Lisa Kudrow and Meg Ryan. The three actresses, who, uh, aside from their gender have nothing but blond hair in common, co-star in Columbia Pictures' "Hanging Up" (opening today) as sisters dealing with an aging father (Matthau). "Hanging Up" The Pointer Sisters they are not. How do three kids -- who in flashbacks appear close in age -- grow up into a mismatched trio wherein Keaton suddenly looks (at least) 15 years older than Ryan and Kudrow? Welcome to Hollywood-style gene splicing."Hanging Up" is just the latest example of mismatched sibling combos. Consider:-- "Little Women": The lack of family genes is very obvious in Gillian Armstrong's 1994 remake featuring an Oscar
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 17, 2000 -- Charlton Heston, call your agent. Twentieth Century Fox's long-anticipated "Planet of the Apes" remake is not extinct. And ditto for -- Warner Bros.' new-look "Superman" movie may fly after all. Word comes today from the Hollywood Reporter that these big-budget sci-fi and super-hero projects -- two of the most highly anticipated movies of the 1990s that never came to pass -- may soon be salvaged from development hell after years of on-again, off-again directors and aborted screenplays. Fox could reportedly seal a deal with Tim Burton before the end of the week to direct its "Apes" remake, while Warner officials are said to be pleased with a new "Superman" screenplay from Bill Wisher, who co-wrote "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" with James Cameron. Fox's announcement that Burton is in talks to direct "Apes" should come as a welc
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 15, 2000 -- Jar Jar Binks bending to the P.C. police? Don't hold your breath. As casting for the second installment of the new "Star Wars" trilogy continues, Lucasfilm is refuting reports that had George Lucas is seeking a more culturally diverse cast in response to accusations of racist stereotyping in "Episode I -- The Phantom Menace". The original Daily Variety article, published last Wednesday, said the new, politically correct roles would include "a Native American character, said to have a forceful, spiritual nature; an Indian or Hispanic character; and an Asian character, possibly trained in martial arts." But in a post on the official 'Star Wars' (www.starwars.com) Web site, Lynne Hale, Lucasfilm's director of communications, labels the Variety report "completely false," saying that no character descriptions have been decided on since
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 11, 2000 -- Seen any good Satanic-possession movies lately? The granddaddy of all devil-in-me flicks, "The Exorcist," is set to return to a handful of U.S. theaters next month in an all-new expanded and restored version that contains "more than one full reel of long-rumored, legendary footage, excised before the film's original release," according to Warner Bros. The new version isn't being billed as a "director's cut," but rather as an "author's cut." Director William Friedkin, who supervised the restoration, says this is the version that author William Peter Blatty (who wrote the screenplay, based on his novel) wanted to see back in 1973. Twenty-six years ago, Friedkin and the studio had other ideas. Now Friedkin's a convert. "After viewing it a quarter of a century later I've come to agree with him," Friedkin says in a
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 10, 2000 -- If director Deepa Mehta is down in the dumps these days, who can blame her? Not only have protesters shut down production of her new movie, "Water," on location in India -- they've threatened to kill and burn her in effigy. George Lucas to the rescue. In today's Daily Variety, the "Star Wars" creator springs for a full-page ad in the trade newspaper, declaring: "Our heart is with Deepa Mehta ... in her current struggles to film 'Water.' Keep fighting, Deepa!" The note was signed by Lucas, partner Rick McCallum "and all your friends at Lucasfilm Ltd." So what's the Lucas-Mehta connection? Mehta directed one episode of the Lucasfilm-produced "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" TV series in the early 1990s, as well as a segment of the 1996 TV-movie "Young Indiana Jones and Travels With Father." Lucas and McCallu
