  • CANNES: Drama Queens (and Kings) Reign

CANNES, May 12, 2000 -- Large gray clouds loom over Le Grand Cannes. It adds to the drama, the chaos, the delayed plane flights … But that isn't stopping our favorite heroes -- Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman -- from bursting on the scene today for the out-of-competition screening of "Under Suspicion." Yes, the Cannes Film Festival gets serious today with the unfolding of some tres (there's that French again) tough dramas.

    A rundown:

British director Ken Loach is famous for getting to the emotional heart of prickly social issues and is very popular in Europe (with many American fans, too.) "Bread and Roses," his in-competition entry here, is an against-all-odds true story is based in Los Angeles (which he shoots in sequence!), and the first film he's set in America.

In the same deep vein, "The King Is Alive" takes place in Africa and is directed by the Danish Kr

  • Big Brother's Eddie: $500,000 richer; beauty queen Jamie: deserved zilch

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 1, 2000 -- He's opinionated and brutish. He's known for countless flashes of private parts. And he's laughing all the way to the bank.

Big Brother houseguest Eddie snagged 59% of the votes nationwide in the show's finale, and deserved it. His honest, gruff persona won over viewers who grew sour with the remaining houseguests' agendas (even though Josh and Curtis did make off with a pretty penny).

The breakdown: Eddie -- Winner: $500,000. The cancer survivor, just 21 years old, remained the only consistent personality on the show. His steady lack of whining steered voters in his direction late in the season.

Josh -- Second Place: $100,000. The consummate flirt cleaned up his act -- basically after every female was banished. The remaining houseguests expected the easygoing All-American to win, but his past exploits with Brittany may have tarnished h

  • Fair Julia Is Queen of Hollywood

HOLLYWOOD, July 26, 2000 -- Who’s the fairest of them all? According to Industry analyst James Ulmer, it’s the Pretty Woman with the (sometimes) long, curly red locks. A Georgia peach by the name of Julia Fiona Roberts tops Ulmer’s Y2K list of the 200 hottest actors and actresses in show business. His roster is due out in book form, titled "James Ulmer’s Hollywood Hot List: The Complete Guide to Star Power," in the fall.

The only other woman to crack the Top 20 is the recently single Meg Ryan, who clocks in at No. 8.

Occupying the No. 2 through No. 7 spots between Roberts and Ryan are Hollywood heavy-hitters Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, Mel Gibson, Bruce Willis, John Travolta and Brad Pitt. Leonardo DiCaprio and Will Smith round out the Top 10.

Among Ulmer’s criteria in determining the Hot List are bankability, professionalism, willingness to travel and promote, acting
