  • 'Waterboy' Whooped

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 31, 2000 -- Were you ever overtaken with a sense of déjà vu during viewing of the 1998 Adam Sandler megahit "The Waterboy"? The family of the late Harold Lloyd thinks that you should.

The late comedian's granddaughter, Suzanne Lloyd Hayes, is suing the Walt Disney Co. for copyright infringement over the studio's "The Waterboy," The Hollywood Reporter says.

The suit, filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, says that the Adam Sandler vehicle was a direct rip-off of the comedian's 1924 silent film "The Freshman."

"There is not only substantial but striking similarity between 'The Freshman' and 'The Waterboy,' including similarity in plot, action, theme, mood, characters and setting," the lawsuit says. "Although some of those elements have been modified to please the '90s audience and to employ the '90s technology, reviews of 'The Waterboy

  • ROLE CALL: Costner Back to 'Waterworld’?

SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 17, 2000 -- Five years ago, “Waterworld” threatened to destroy Kevin Costner’s career, what with all the negative press surrounding its budget overruns, logistical filming problems and on-set rifts. And the film reportedly did destroy Costner’s working relationship with Kevin Reynolds, the director who had previously worked with the star on "Fandango" and "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves." (Remember that, after Reynolds finished shooting "Waterworld," Costner fired him and edited the picture himself -- and threw in some CGI effects to enhance his own receding hairline.)

But now that’s all water under the bridge (pardon the pun). According to Variety, Costner and Reynolds are seriously thinking about working together again and -- get this -- the movie they want to make takes place mostly at sea.

Reynolds and Costner would reteam for "Okracoke," a

  • Halle Berry in (More) Hot Water

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 1, 2000 -- It's up to prosecutors now.

Authorities in Los Angeles have determined that actress Halle Berry was the driver in an alleged hit-and-run crash that left two people -- including the 33-year-old star -- injured. On Tuesday, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department forwarded the case to prosecutors to pursue possible charges.

Halle Berry Berry, meanwhile, has issued a statement through her rep saying she was "taking this situation very seriously."

Good thing. The sheriff's department filing alleges Berry was behind the wheel of a rented Chevrolet Blazer that collided with another vehicle at about 2 a.m. on Feb. 23 at Sunset Boulevard and Doheny Drive in West Hollywood, according to Deputy Carlos Lopez. It was not known how long after the crash Berry allegedly fled the scene.

What is known is this: The female driver of

  • UNSPOOLED: Lucas Supports 'Water'-Logged Director

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 10, 2000 -- If director Deepa Mehta is down in the dumps these days, who can blame her? Not only have protesters shut down production of her new movie, "Water," on location in India -- they've threatened to kill and burn her in effigy.

    George Lucas to the rescue.

In today's Daily Variety, the "Star Wars" creator springs for a full-page ad in the trade newspaper, declaring: "Our heart is with Deepa Mehta ... in her current struggles to film 'Water.' Keep fighting, Deepa!"

The note was signed by Lucas, partner Rick McCallum "and all your friends at Lucasfilm Ltd."

So what's the Lucas-Mehta connection? Mehta directed one episode of the Lucasfilm-produced "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" TV series in the early 1990s, as well as a segment of the 1996 TV-movie "Young Indiana Jones and Travels With Father."

    Lucas and McCallu
