We Feed the World (2005)

Synopsis

In this revealing documentary, Austrian filmmaker Erwin Wagenhofer explores the state of a globalized food industry from the inside perspective of those who know it best -- the workers. From the independent Brittany fisherman with a keen eye for quality to the fury of an Austrian farmer disturbed that a ton of wheat sells for less than an equal amount of road salt, this is a view of the food industry rarely addressed on the nightly news. In a time when the Amazon is being cleared in an effort to make room for more soybeans, copious amounts of Vienna bread is discarded on a daily basis, and food company CEOs view water as a valuable market commodity, the actions of the food industry often take a quiet back seat to more pressing issues. Now, as Wagenhofer trains his unflinching lens squarely on the people who literally put food on our plates night after night, audiences can witness firsthand the convenient but at times damning effects of a globalized food industry determined to make a profit no matter what the cost.
