Synopsis:
It begins with total darkness. Then: Color - in a blaze of sharp light - and Noise - Microphone feedback. A cough. A hush. Then: a word; a musical note; an image; or a movement; followed by grateful applause. Finally as the light fades: respect, admiration, maybe even... love. Like moths to a flame, performers in the volatile downtown arts scene barter their souls for the hope of passing from the periphery of life into the "color and noise" of the spotlight. "When" is the sordid and revealing portrait of four struggling actresses on New York's Lower East Side traveling paths so precarious, that each reckless decision or lost opportunity invites humiliation, betrayal, personal corruption and for the rare few - redemption.
