Where Is Where? (2009)

Synopsis

Finnish artist and filmmaker Eija-Liisa Ahtila examines mankind's obsession with violence and revenge in this experimental drama. In the 1950's, two Arab boys living in Algeria have decided they can no longer tolerate the presence of the French colonial forces after a wave of violence sweeps through their town. The boys gang up on a friend their age who is French, less out of personal malice than to send a message to the world about their disgust with the French occupation, and the attack leaves the French boy dead. Meanwhile, a poet in Europe who has read about this incident has decided to use the tragedy as the basis for his latest work. However, he's interrupted in his writings when the specter of Death pays a visit. In addition to following two narrative threads at once, Ahtila tells the story using a barrage of images, with four images projected at once onto two screens, including both color and black and white footage as well as staged and newsreel footage. Where Is Where? received its American premiere at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.
