This movie closely follows the miserable lives led by five contemporary Chinese girls who are friends. Each of them suffers various kinds of mistreatment purely because of their gender. Eventually they have had more than enough of this and they are convinced that their future will be no better than their past. Thus, dressed in symbolic red robes, they gather together and travel to a temple and hang themselves.
