In this gentle youth drama from Hong Kong, two teenage brothers end up spending the summer of '87 without parental supervision. 14-year-old Chi is doing poorly at school while his little brother Shing is doing just fine. Still, their stern father, a corporate security guard, forces them to spend their summer in the apartment studying. Their mother abandoned them a few months earlier and moved to San Francisco. While she wants her sons to join her, she wants her husband to remain in China. Though outwardly studious and obedient, as soon as dad disappears, the boys take off for summer fun in their busy city and have many adventures, some of them dangerous. As the summer progresses, the lads come to miss their mother, while their father deals with his feelings of inadequacy.
