HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 17, 2000 -- In a plot twist that befits the stuff of Columbo, the stolen Oscars case has yielded yet another suspect. One John Harris, 55, of Los Angeles was charged Friday with one count of receiving stolen property and one count of being an accessory to grand theft, the Los Angeles Daily News reports. No big deal, right? Well, get a load of this: Harris is also the brother of Willie Fulgear, the same 61-year-old man who was rewarded $50K (and invites to the Oscars ceremony) for recovering 52 of the 55 missing statuettes in March. Apparently, detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department's Burglary-Auto Theft Division had learned that Harris had stored the loots at his L.A. home and was expecting to get paid money for doing so. No other details were released about the case. According to the Daily News report, the LAPD has begun an investigati
HOLLYWOOD, Mar. 7, 2001 -- As an actor, you don't necessarily want your work on screen to become a real-life event. Actor Russell Crowe, 36, who plays a hostage negotiator sent to South America to assist in the release of a kidnapped U.S. engineer in his latest film, "Proof of Life," has found himself the target of a real-life abduction plot, according to the FBI. Federal agents have begun their investigation and have interviewed Crowe about the situation as part of the probe.Normally, the FBI declines to discuss the aspects of a case but due to the media reports already surfacing, Bureau spokeswoman Laura Bosley has released the following statement: "In light of the [media reports], we have confirmed that we have an investigation into a plot to kidnap [Crowe]." She went on to say the probe was continuing.According to the syndicated TV show "Entertainment Tonight,

According to the buzz at Cannes, the film is being kept closely under wraps, so there's not much known on the subject matter. Could be about a mouse or a TV evangelist or maybe a raunchy TV talk show host. What is known is that the project is being put together by the William Morris Agency Independent department, with co-heads Cassian Elwes and Rena Ronson negotiating the deal.
Daryl Hannah, of Splash, has nothing to be embarrassed about anymore. The actress won undisclosed libel damages Tuesday from The Daily Mirror after the British newspaper published a widely copied story claiming she had skipped her London play rehearsals to attend her dog's birthday party in Los Angeles. The newspaper apologized to the London High Court for printing the inaccurate story in October.

Bakely was shot while waiting for Blake in his car outside Vitello's, a Los Angeles-area restaurant. The police also found a box of bullets in Blake's house that fits the gun. The gun is not registered to Blake. The Los Angeles police department refused to confirm or deny the report.
HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 24, 2000 -- Another day, another update on Anne Heche. And the latest? Well, she is happy. Really. Or at least that's what Mark Burg, producer of "John Q," the flick the actress is currently shooting in Tonronto, said. "Anne is happy to be in Toronto and happy to be working," Burg, who dined with Heche on Monday, told Reuters. To beat a dead horse to the ground, Heche broke up with girlfriend Ellen Degeneres Saturday and was found in a questionable state somewhere near Fresno, Calif., later that day. The actress was then briefly hospitalized, and was last seen at Los Angeles International Airport, en route to Toronto. And, while rampant rumor attributed her behaviors over the weekend to drugs, Burg says differently. "It was sunstroke, that makes you a little dizzy. No drugs," Burg told the news agency. "She w
HOLLYWOOD, June 26, 2000 -- Memo to all past and future Oscar recipients: After your star has faded, after you've spent your fortune and pawned all your silverware, don’t even think about selling that gold statue on your mantle. And remind your loved ones not to try selling it after you're dead. Just ask Sid Luft, ex-manager and onetime husband (from 1952 to 1962) of the late Judy Garland, and he'll tell you how big a headache it is to get on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' hit list. Luft was in court Friday, fending off an Academy lawsuit accusing him of trying to sell Garland's Oscar on the Web. A Web site called Nate's Autographs (www.natesautographs.com) recently listed Garland's long-lost 1940 mini-Oscar statuette, which she received "for her outstanding performance as a screen juvenile" in "The Wizard of Oz," for sale. The auction, which ha
SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 13, 2000 -- Looks like Halle Berry may have a few more days to contemplate on what to wear to court. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office dispelled rampant reports that Berry would be charged as soon as today in an alleged felony hit-and-run case. Officials with the prosecutor's office told Hollywood.com that they did not anticipate filing any charges against the 33-year-old actress -- at least not today anyway. SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 8, 2000 -- The Manhattan detective depicted in the magazine article, "A Cold Case," took three decades to solve a crime. The time was considerably less for mega-star Tom Hanks to acquire the rights to it. The story by New Yorker staff writer Philip Gourevitch appears in the magazine's Feb. 14 issue, which hit newsstands on Monday. Before the ink was even dry, Hanks and his Universal-based production shingle, the Playtone Co., put up a six-figure advance to pounce on the rights. What's the big deal? "Case" details the real-life story of a detective's journey to solve the 1970 murder of a Manhattan restaurateur. Playtone confirmed that the actor is interested in playing the lead character. SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 28, 2000 -- So, Steven Spielberg has finally given the OK to release his neo-classic Universal movies on DVD. That's nice, but it's no big deal, right? Wrong. Because even though DVD's emergence as the dominant home entertainment format is undeniable, there are a lot of filmmakers, movie studio types and other influential people out there who continue to deny it, leaving lots of classic movies that have been available on plain ol' VHS tape for years unreleased in the new format. In fact, a DVD collector's most-wanted-disc list would include these hall of fame movies: "Citizen Kane" (1941), "King Kong" (the 1933 original), the "Godfather" trilogy, "Lawrence of Arabia" (1962), "The Apartment" (1960), "The African Queen" (1951), "Bringing Up Baby" (1938), "Superman" (1978) and its sequels, "Back to the Future" and "The French Connection"
