  • CANNES: Enough With the Duck Liver
By: Bridgit Dengel Aug 16, 2001

CANNES, May 18, 2000 -- How much drama, how much champagne, how much fois gras (that's duck liver) can be indulged in before the big crash? Even the clouds here are too tired to roll in (there had been reports of possible rain). It is yet another sunny, beautiful day with beach bunnies sprawled across the sand. Even though there are three more days of films, fetes and fun, things are slowing down at Cannes Film Festival and some pavilions are even starting to pack up. Not that that's stopping s

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 15, 2000 -- Actress Melanie Griffith has checked into a hospital program in Marina Del Rey, Calif., to combat her addiction to prescription drugs taken for a neck injury, her publicist announced Tuesday. "My doctor has referred me to the Daniel Freeman Hospital to step down from the prescribed medication that I have been taking for a neck injury," Griffith said in a statement. "I appreciate everyone's concern, and I am sure that you will respect my and my family's privacy." Accor

  • EXTRA: 'Demented' As Ever
By: Fiona Ng Mar 19, 2001

HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 17, 2000 - He's been known as the "pope of trash," the "king of suburban exploitation," and other similarly flattering titles. And in a directorial career pushing 26 years, 15 oft-revolting films have spawned from his gross-out mind, any of which could make the Farrelly brothers' films look like Disney stuff. After years of cult veneration, John Waters -- America's campiest film auteur -- is inching within reach of the pop-culture radar with "Cecil B. Demented," another absurd e

The cheerleaders of "Bring It On" easily topped the chart, despite tracking studies suggesting a closer race for first place with "The Art of War." Universal's opening of Beacon Pictures' PG-13-rated dark comedy about cheerleaders kicked off to a cheerful ESTIMATED $17.41 million at 2,380 theaters ($7,315 per theater). Its per-theater average was the highest for any film playing in wide release this weekend. "In an environment this year where there were lots of teen films that didn't w

  • B.O. FORECAST: Yet Another 'Replacement'?
By: Steve Ryfle Mar 19, 2001

HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 11, 2000 -- It looks like the revolving door at the box office will keep turning this weekend, as the transparent thriller "Hollow Man" gives way to yet another new No. 1 flick. The question is: Which lukewarm newcomer will it be? Three major films will make their nationwide debut, while a fourth flick, the interesting yet small "Cecil B. DeMented," gets an expanded limited release. So the candidates for top honors at the multiplexes are "Bless the Child," "The Replacements" and

The R-rated fantasy suspense thriller from New Line opened to a sexy ESTIMATED $17.2 million at 2,411 theaters ($7,134 per theater). "Obviously, we're thrilled with the opening," New Line distribution president David Tuckerman said Sunday morning. "It shows that Jennifer Lopez is a star and can open a picture. Also, the two Vinces - Vaughn and D'Onofrio - were very strong, as they always are." New Line clearly

Synopsis
A group of obsessed "cinema terrorists," lead by Cecil B DeMented, make it their mission to avenge the crass sins of commercial movie culture through acts of brazen filmmaking and vigilante outlaw cinema retribution. As the movie begins, Cecil and his "Sprocket Holes" gang kidnap Honey Whitlock, a beloved Hollywood movie star visiting Baltimore for the premiere of her latest blockbuster. Once Whitlock is their prisoner, DeMented and his horny, tatooed crew immediately go into production on "Raving Beauty," the ultimate underground movie in which Whitlock is forced to play the insane owner of a failed art theatre. Armed with lights, cameras, heavy artillery and courage to burn, DeMented and his guerrilla production team wreak havoc on the Baltimore film scene, hitting targets from the Maryland Film Commission to penetrating the high-security set of a major big-budget sequel.
