Returning from military service, farmer Boota Singh finds his farm in disrepair and his family inheritance in question. Boota's uncle, who secretly wants the family's land for himself, insists that Boota is too old to marry and therefore disinherited. But Boota meets the woman of his dreams when he encounters teenage Zainab. Boota must rescue Muslim Zainab when Pakistan and India split and his neighbors form a mob to capture her. Soon Boota and Zainab have married and the neighbors accept her into the community. But Boota's uncle betrays his nephew and reports Zainab to the police, who have her deported to Pakistan. Boota spends years following after his lost love, facing violence and riots with ultimately tragic consequences.
