Upon retiring from his post as a tai chi master, Mr. Chu decides to leave Beijing for America and move in with his only son, Alex. Alex lives in New York City with his Caucasian wife Martha, a novelist, and their six-year-old son. Problems quickly arise between Mr. Chu and Martha and suddenly the family is on the verge of being destroyed. While teaching tai chi at a Chinese school, Mr. Chu meets a cooking instructor, the twice-widowed Mrs. Chen. Alex notices his father's interest in her and seizes the opportunity to play matchmaker in the hopes of saving his family.
