Robert Tanner is an ordinary seeming man with a pleasant marriage and a well-loved son. He also has a responsible position as a supermarket manager. However, he's been living a little bit too well, so much so that his salary isn't enough to make ends meet. After selling his car and embezzling from the store he runs, the tension of his escalating crisis proves too much for him. He smothers his wife and son while they are sleeping, and leaves his home the next day quite calmly, taking a train to nowhere in particular. He's not a particularly memorable man to look at, and even after he tells his story to a journalist after he learns that the murders have been found and publicized in the press, the police are unable to find him. The journalist notified the police after hearing Robert's story, but he easily evades them.
