Justin Playfair is a wealthy widower and retired judge who believes that he is Sherlock Holmes. His greedy brother Blevins hires psychologist Dr. Mildred Watson to declare Justin insane so that he can take control of his money and get himself out of debt. Instead, Dr. Watson finds herself drawn into Justin's world, agreeing to help him find his imaginary nemesis, Professor Moriarty. But reality intrudes into their activities when the ruthless men to whom Blevins owes money decide to assassinate Justin.
