After an innocent African-American man is killed because of the actions of powerful rancher Frank Tanner, Sheriff Bob Valdez decides that the man's pregnant widow should be given $200. He requests half of the money from the townspeople and the other $100 from Tanner, who is furious at the suggestion. Tanner orders his men to tie Valdez to a wooden cross and take him into the desert. Valdez manages to free himself from the deathtrap, but is badly injured in the process. After he has recuperated at a friend's ranch, the experienced Indian fighter and marksman puts on his old cavalry uniform and sends a man to Tanner with the message, "Valdez is coming." Once on Tanner's compound, the men face off in a gun battle and Valdez escapes with Tanner's wife. All of the men that Tanner send after Valdez are killed, one by one until only Tanner is left and he is a coward against Valdez.
