Smitty is a naïve young man when he is sent to prison on a drug charge for six months. In prison, he is assigned a cell with a drag queen named Queenie, and gets to know Rocky and his gay companion Mona. Smitty is horrified by the violence against prisoners from other inmates and the unsympathetic guards. He survives the system in a fashion due to the protection of Rocky and eventually becomes a brutal leader himself.
