After Van Horne saves an Irishman named Emmet Keogh from a band of thieves,Keogh, his rum-running friend Jennings, and Van Horne are captured by the revolutionary leader Colonel Santilla. Santilla offers them freedom and safe passage to the United States if they will kill his enemy, Tomas De La Plata. So Van Horne reopens the church in De La Plata's village to set a trap for him.
