The gospel of St. Matthew is told through hippie characters living in New York City in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Jesus Christ is a wandering minstrel who uses an horn-like instrument to summon believers, only a few in the city hear it and they become his followers . John the Baptist has been baptizing young people in a Central Park fountain, and when Jesus joins their group, they all travel around the city acting out Biblical parables and spreading the word about their belief in him as the Messiah.
