Synopsis
As Russians living in Riga when the Soviet Union collapsed, Wadim's family was regarded as occupiers by the newly independent Latvians and became a target of bitterness. They ended up seeking asylum in Hamburg, Germany where they lived for 13 years. For six-year-old Wadim, he integrated easily into the new community by becoming an altar boy and getting good grades in school. But his home life was another story. Things with his parents were tense because after years of temporary residency permits, they were unable to get permanent status or work. When Latvia and Germany sign a treaty allowing deportation of asylum seekers back to Latvia, the family begins to crumble from the stress and feelings of instability. One evening, Wadim's family finds itself utterly torn apart.
