During the German occupation of Athens in 1943, the Helianos family finds their life undergoing a profound change when their apartment is commandeered by a German officer. The officer, Captain Kalter, treats the family as indentured servants. To protect his family, the father does the Captain's bidding without protest. However, his young son is much less acquiescent, and his wife and daughter display their own ambivalent feelings about their intruder. Soon, the family establishes a routine and goes about their lives as if things are normal. When the Captain abruptly leaves for Germany, and then suddenly returns, things take an unexpected turn.
