Meet the Solntsevi family: Masha, Leopold, and Albert are three siblings abandoned by their mother and trying to make their life in a ramshackle house on the shore in the coastal town of Crimea. In trouble with the law and outcasts in their town, every effort they make to improve their lot only gets them into one outlandish situation after another. Masha's latest idea involves charming a Frenchman in town to collect an inheritance and convincing him to marry her and take her and her brothers away to Paris. That means she must spurn the advances of the honest and endearing young census taker whom she has real feelings for because he comes from a more humble background. Explosions, robberies, and kidnappings ensue as the Solntsevis head to Moscow while being chased by the police as well as a few neighbors with a grudge.
