Child 44 author: ‘I’m proud of Russia ban’

The author of the book behind TOM HARDY’s latest movie CHILD 44 feels “proud” after the film was banned in Russia.
British writer Tom Rob Smith wrote the novel about a disgraced Soviet agent tracking down a serial child killer and it has been turned into a new movie by Hollywood heavyweight Sir Ridley Scott.
The film was banned from Russian cinemas this week (beg13Apr15) by Culture Ministry officials amid concerns it depicts the country in a negative light, but Smith is not dismayed by the setback.
He tells Britain’s The Times newspaper, “(The film is not being released) in Russia, where on the eve of the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, it has been deemed ‘impermissable’ to screen a film so critical of the Soviet leadership and it has been banned. Though I feel sad at that decision, I’m proud that the finished film is so powerful it requires censorship.”
The film’s stars, Hardy and Noomi Rapace, have both condemned the ban.
Child 44 opens in the U.K. and U.S. cinemas on Friday (17Apr15).
