Golfetto, a rich factory owner in Venice/Italy, is a racist. He employees several domestic servants from poor countries and has an extramarital affair with a Nigerian prostitute. His daughter Laura is an elementary school teacher; they have not spoken to each other for years. Unbeknownst to him, she has an affair with one of his black employees and expects a baby from him. Laura's ex-boyfriend, a policeman and also a racist, is jealous and tries to win her back. When it turns out that his factory has big financial problems, Golfetto is left with only a handful of workers. He is also deeply troubled by the disappearance of the prostitute with whom he had established a deep emotional relationship. Meanwhile, Laura's affair disappears and leaves her alone, pregnant with a child.
