Synopsis
1970. A shy awkward student named Bruno travels to a kibbutz in Israel in search of his biological father. He carries a letter with his father's name on it. When he finally locates his father, Avi, he is briskly turned away. Avi does not want to be disturbed by this young German or the past he represents. After much effort, Bruno succeeds in getting Avi to break his silence. Back in 1942, Avi went by Albert to prevent the Nazis from identifying him as a Jew. After a failed attempt to cross the Swiss-German border, he is found by a local farmer named Fritz and his wife Emma. They decide to hide Albert at their remote farm in the mountains of the Black Forest. The couple have always dreamed of having a son and their lack there of casts a gloomy shadow on their relationship. Desperate for an heir, Fritz asks Albert to father a child with his wife. Albert feels indebted to Fritz and finally agrees. Emma goes along with the subterfuge as she has no other choice if she wants a child. But human relations are never that simple.
