Synopsis
Arthur is depressed as he travels to Tokyo and heads for a mysterious forest at the foot of Mt. Fuji. He intends to commit suicide, but his initial attempt is interrupted by another desperate soul, Takumi, who also came to the "Suicide Forest" to take his own life, but changed his mind. Arthur tries to help Takumi survive, and the men become lost and must rely on each other to make it through a series of life-threatening mishaps. Over the course of their misadventure, flashbacks reveal that guilt over the death of Arthur's wife, Joan, is what drove him to attempt suicide. Arthur nearly becomes the next victim of the "Suicide Forest" before he is finally saved by park rangers. While recovering, he discovers shocking and meaningful truths about his experiences, his friend in the forest, his wife, and meaning in his life.
