Who knew that Amish teens--like other American adolescents--smoke cigarettes, go to the mall, blast rock 'n' roll, watch TV, and even get laid? At 16, Amish youth are released from Old World restrictions to experience the outside, or as they call it, the "English world," so they can decide for themselves whether to be baptized and accept the Amish way for eternity. Like a vaccination, this period is designed to give kids a strong dose of the "devil's playground," so they won't crave it later.
