British director Wilfred Noy could never be accused of having a style of his own, which made him the ideal man to transfer the personal visions of others to the screen. Apparently, the personal vision of Ave Maria author Reuben Gilmer was that Amnesia was a workable plot device. It is certainly worked to death in this 5-reel romance, set among the upper classes. When the heroine loses her memory, she begins a chain reaction of events leading inexorably to tragedy. Incidentally, the "Rita Johnson" appearing as Helen Gray in Ave Maria was not the 1940s second lead of the same name.
